klugeLibrary of Congress
Kluge Fellowships
Deadline: July 15, 2015 (review by OSP is not required)
Award Amount: $4,200 per month for 4-11 months
Eligible Disciplines: All humanities and social sciences

The John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress invites qualified scholars to conduct research at the Kluge Center using the Library of Congress collections and resources for a period of up to eleven months.  The Kluge Center especially encourages humanistic and social science research that makes use of the Library's large and varied collections. Interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, or multi-lingual research is particularly welcome. Among the collections available to researchers are the world's largest law library and outstanding multi-lingual collections of books and periodicals. Deep special collections of manuscripts, maps, music, films, recorded sound, prints and photographs are also available.  Scholars who have received a terminal advanced degree within the past seven years in the humanities, social sciences or in a professional field such as architecture or law are eligible.

Humanities Collections and Reference Resources
Deadline: July 17, 2014
Award Amount: Up to $350,000 over up to 3 years
Eligible Disciplines: languages; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence; philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, criticism and theory of the arts; social sciences with humanistic content and methods

This grant supports projects that provide an essential underpinning for scholarship, education, and public programming in the humanities. Funding from this program strengthens efforts to extend the life of such materials and make their intellectual content widely accessible, often through the use of digital technology.  Awards are also made to create various reference resources that facilitate use of cultural materials, from works that provide basic information quickly to tools that synthesize and codify knowledge of a subject for in-depth investigation.

hiltHarvard Initiative for Learning and Teaching (HILT)
Spark Grants
Deadline: July 18, 2014
Award Amount: $5,000-$15,000
Eligible Disciplines: All

HILT's mission is to catalyze innovation and excellence in learning and teaching at Harvard.  These grants are designed to help "spark" promising teaching and learning projects from idea to reality and position innovations for future success.  Funding can be used, for example, to pay for a research assistant, hire a graduate student with academic technology expertise, and convene collaborative groups.  Through Spark Grants, awardees will receive resources, feedback, and community support to help them develop their ideas into prototypes, pilots, and small-scale innovations.  HILT will also strive to support any future scaling-up of Spark Grant projects by increasing their visibility and connecting them with the broader Harvard community.

Eligible Disciplines: All

The Fulbright Scholar Program offers approximately 800 teaching, research or combination teaching/research grants to U.S. faculty and experienced professionals for teaching and/or conducting research abroad. Grants are offered in a wide variety of academic and professional fields in over 125 countries worldwide. Grant lengths also vary in duration and applicants can propose projects for a period of two to 12 months, as specified in the individual award descriptions. Fulbright grants are budgeted to cover travel and living costs in-country for the grantee.

grahamElizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation Grants

Eligible Disciplines: Visual Arts

The Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation is dedicated to fostering awareness and appreciation of contemporary visual art, primarily through the support of catalogues and other publications that document exhibitions of work by emerging or under-recognized artists.  Of particular interest are projects that attempt to bring together artists and the community, support artists from marginalized populations, and provide exposure to contemporary art where it may not otherwise be seen.  Funding is currently available to support direct costs for catalogues and other publications accompanying contemporary art exhibitions and projects, especially those supporting emerging and under-recognized artists, and produced by organizations outside the nation's cultural centers. Limited funds are also available for publications related to the grantee organization and its programs or collections.

Media Projects
Deadline: August 13, 2014
Award Amount: $40,000 to $1,000,000
Eligible Disciplines: languages; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence; philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, criticism and theory of the arts; social sciences with humanistic content and methods

Media Projects grants support film, television and radio projects.  Film and television projects may be single programs or a series addressing significant figures, events, or ideas. Programs must be intended for national distribution. The Division of Public Programs welcomes projects ranging in length from short-form to broadcast-length video.  Radio projects may involve single programs, limited series, or segments within an ongoing program. They may also develop new humanities content to augment existing radio programming or add greater historical background or humanities analysis to the subjects of existing programs. They may be intended for regional or national distribution.

 

Production grants support the production and distribution of films, television programs, radio programs, and related programs that promise to engage the public.

Development grants enable media producers to collaborate with scholars to develop humanities content and to prepare programs for production. Grants should result in a script and should also yield a detailed plan for outreach and public engagement in collaboration with a partner organization or organizations.

Museums, Libraries and Cultural Organizations

Award Amount: $40,000 - $1,000,000
Eligible Disciplines: languages; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence; philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, criticism and theory of the arts; social sciences with humanistic content and methods

Museums, Libraries, and Cultural Organizations grants provide support for museums, libraries, historic places, and other organizations that produce public programs in the humanities.  Grants support the following formats:

  • exhibitions at museums, libraries, and other venues;
  • interpretations of historic places, sites, or regions; and
  • book/film discussion programs; living history presentations; and other face-to-face programs at libraries, community centers, and other public venues.
Implementation grants support final scholarly research and consultation, design development, production, and installation of a project for presentation to the public.

Planning grants support the early stages of project development, including consultation with scholars, refinement of humanities themes, preliminary design, testing, and audience evaluation.
