nsfNational Science Foundation
Linguistics Program
Deadline: July 15, 2013
Award Amount: Varies.  Most awards are under $500,000
Award Duration: Varies.  Most grants under three years, although some awarded up to five years

The Linguistics Program supports basic science in the domain of human language, encompassing investigations of the grammatical properties of individual human languages, and of natural language in general. Research areas include syntax, semantics, morphology, phonetics, and phonology.

The program encourages projects that are interdisciplinary in methodological or theoretical perspective, and that address questions that cross disciplinary boundaries.

 

The Linguistics Program accepts proposals for a variety of project types: research proposals from scholars with PhDs or equivalent degrees, proposals for Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants, and CAREER proposals. NSF will also consider proposals for workshops, conferences, and training activities.

stipendNational Endowment for the Humanities
Summer Stipends

Harvard Pre-Proposal Deadline: July 15, 2013 by 5pm
Award Amount: $6,000 for two consecutive months (beginning May 2014 or later)
Eligible Disciplines: languages; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence; philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, criticism and theory of the arts; social sciences with humanistic content and methods

NEH Summer Stipends support individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both. Summer Stipends support continuous full-time work on a humanities project at any stage of development for a period of two months. Summer Stipends normally support work carried out during the summer months, but arrangements can be made for other times of the year. Recipients usually produce articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly resources.  

 

This is a limited submission opportunity.  Only two (2) applications may be submitted from Harvard University.  For more information on the award and the Harvard nomination process, see here.

 


fulbrightFulbright Scholar Program
Deadline: August 1, 2013 (review by OSP is not required)
Award Amount: Varies by country and type of award
Eligible Disciplines: All

The Fulbright Scholar Program offers approximately 800 teaching, research or combination teaching/research grants to U.S. faculty and experienced professionals for teaching and/or conducting research abroad. Grants are offered in a wide variety of academic and professional fields in over 125 countries worldwide for the 2014-2015 academic year. Grant lengths also vary in duration and applicants can propose projects for a period of two to 12 months, as specified in the individual award descriptions. Fulbright grants are budgeted to cover travel and living costs in-country for the grantee.

America's Historical and Cultural Organizations
Deadline: August 14, 2013
Planning Grant Amount: up to $75,000
Implementation Grant Amount: up to $400,000.  Occasionally, awards up to $1M are made for projects that have unusual significance and promise to reach exceptionally wide audiences.
Target Disciplines: languages; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence; philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, criticism and theory of the arts; social sciences with humanistic content and methods

America's Historical and Cultural Organizations grants provide support for museums, libraries, historic places, and other organizations that produce public programs in the humanities.

Grants support the following formats:

  • exhibitions at museums, libraries, and other venues;
  • interpretations of historic places, sites, or regions;
  • book/film discussion programs; living history presentations; other face-to-face programs at libraries, community centers, and other public venues; and
  • interpretive websites.

Planning grants support the early stages of project development, including consultation with scholars, refinement of humanities themes, preliminary design, and audience evaluation.  For more information, see here

America's Media Makers Grants
Deadline: August 14, 2013
Development Grant Amount: up to $75,000
Production Grant Amount: up to $1M
Eligible Disciplines: languages; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence; philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, criticism and theory of the arts; social sciences with humanistic content and methods

America's Media Makers grants support the following formats:
  • Interactive digital media: Includes websites, games, mobile applications, virtual environments, streaming video, or podcasts.   
  • Film and television projects: Single programs or a series that addresses significant figures, events, or developments and draw their content from humanities scholarship. They must be intended for national distribution.
  • Radio projects: May involve single programs, limited series, or segments within an ongoing program vehicle. They may also develop new humanities content to augment existing radio programming or add greater historical background or humanities analysis to the subjects of existing programs. 

Development grants enable media producers to collaborate with scholars to develop humanities content and to prepare programs for production.  For more information, see here

  

Production grants support the production and distribution of digital projects, films, television programs, radio programs, and related programs that promise to engage the public.  For more information, see here.  

 


warholAndy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts
Deadline: September 1, 2013
Award Amount: Unspecified.  Most grants are under $150,000
Eligible Disciplines: Visual arts

The Foundation's grantmaking activity is focused on serving the needs of artists by funding the institutions that support them.  Grants are made for scholarly exhibitions at museums; curatorial research; visual arts programming at artist-centered organizations; artist residencies and commissions; arts writing; and efforts to promote the health, welfare and first amendment rights of artists.  The work of choreographers and performing artists occasionally is funded when the visual arts are an inherent element of a production.
