National Endowment for the Humanities
America's Media Makers
Deadline: January 9, 2013
Development Grant Amount: up to $75,000
Production Grant Amount: up to $1M
Target Disciplines: languages; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence; philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, criticism and theory of the arts; social sciences with humanistic content and methods

America's Media Makers grants support the following formats:
  • Interactive digital media: Includes websites, games, mobile applications, virtual environments, streaming video, or podcasts.   
  • Film and television projects: Single programs or a series that addresses significant figures, events, or developments and draw their content from humanities scholarship. They must be intended for national distribution.
  • Radio projects: May involve single programs, limited series, or segments within an ongoing program vehicle. They may also develop new humanities content to augment existing radio programming or add greater historical background or humanities analysis to the subjects of existing programs. 

Development grants enable media producers to collaborate with scholars to develop humanities content and to prepare programs for production.  For more information, see here

  

Production grants support the production and distribution of digital projects, films, television programs, radio programs, and related programs that promise to engage the public.  For more information, see here


National Endowment for the Humanities
America's Historical and Cultural Organizations
Deadline: January 9, 2013
Planning Grant Amount: up to $75,000
Implementation Grant Amount: up to $400,000.  Occasionally, awards up to $1M are made for projects that have unusual significance and promise to reach exceptionally wide audiences.
Target Disciplines: languages; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence; philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, criticism and theory of the arts; social sciences with humanistic content and methods

America's Historical and Cultural Organizations grants provide support for museums, libraries, historic places, and other organizations that produce public programs in the humanities.

Grants support the following formats:

  • exhibitions at museums, libraries, and other venues;
  • interpretations of historic places, sites, or regions;
  • book/film discussion programs; living history presentations; other face-to-face programs at libraries, community centers, and other public venues; and
  • interpretive websites.

Planning grants support the early stages of project development, including consultation with scholars, refinement of humanities themes, preliminary design, and audience evaluation.  For more information, see here

 

Implementation grants support final scholarly research and consultation, design development, production, and installation of a project for presentation to the public.  For more information, see here


Institute of Museum and Library Services
Museums for America Grants
Deadline: January 15, 2013
Award Amount: up to $150,000, includes indirect costs, requires 1:1 match
Target Disciplines: Faculty affiliated with Harvard museums

MFA grants support activities that strengthen museums as active resources for lifelong learning, as important institutions in the establishment of livable communities, and as good stewards of the nation's collections. MFA grants can fund both new and ongoing museum activities and programs. Examples include planning, managing and conserving collections, improving public access, training, conducting programmatic research, school and public programming, producing exhibitions, and integrating new or upgraded technologies into your operations.

This award requires cost-sharing. Applicant must provide funds from non-federal sources in an amount that is equal to or greater than the amount of the grant. These costs could be supported by a contribution of property and services and in-kind contributions, such as staff or volunteer time that support project activities.

Kress Foundation
Conservation Grants
Deadline: January 15, 2013
Award Amount: up to $100,000
Target Disciplines:  Art Conservation, History of Art and Architecture

The Kress Foundation Conservation program supports the professional practice of art conservation, especially as it relates to European art of the pre-modern era. Grants are awarded to projects that create and disseminate specialized knowledge, including archival projects, development and dissemination of scholarly databases, documentation projects, exhibitions and publications focusing on art conservation, scholarly publications, and technical and scientific studies.  Grants are also awarded for activities that permit conservators and conservation scientists to share their expertise with both professional colleagues and a broad audience through international exchanges, professional meetings, conferences, symposia, consultations, the presentation of research, exhibitions that include a prominent focus on materials and techniques, and other professional events.

Kress Foundation
History of Art Grants
Deadline: January 15, 2013
Award Amount: Up to $100,000
Target Disciplines: History of Art and Architecture

The Kress Foundation History of Art program supports scholarly projects that will enhance the appreciation and understanding of European art and architecture.  Grants are awarded to projects that create and disseminate specialized knowledge, including archival projects, development and dissemination of scholarly databases, documentation projects, museum exhibitions and publications, photographic campaigns, scholarly catalogues and publications, and technical and scientific studies.  Grants are also awarded for activities that permit art historians to share their expertise through international exchanges, professional meetings, conferences, symposia, consultations, the presentation of research, and other professional events.

Terra Foundation for American Art
Publication Grants
Deadline: January 15, 2013
Award Amount: Books may receive a grant up to $30,000 (though generally grants do not exceed $15,000). Articles may receive a grant up to $3,000
Target Disciplines: History of Art (American)

The Terra Foundation for American Art provides support for publication projects on historical American art (circa 1500 to 1980) that make a significant contribution to scholarship and have an international dimension. International dimensions might include translations of important texts on American art; publications that are written by non-U.S. scholars or that have a significant number of non-U.S. contributors; and publications with a focused thesis exploring American art in an international context. The grants are designed to advance and internationalize scholarship on American art and provide individuals outside the United States with greater access to resources in the field.  Projects must be under contract for publication with a United States 501(c)(3) publisher or the international equivalent and grants must be submitted by the publisher.  Projects involving a commercial publisher based in the United States are not eligible.

National Endowment for the Humanities
Digital Humanities Implementation Grants
Deadline: January 23, 2013
Award Amount: up to $325,000
Target Disciplines: languages; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence; philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, criticism and theory of the arts; social sciences with humanistic content and methods

This program is designed to fund the implementation of innovative digital-humanities projects that have successfully completed a start-up phase and demonstrated their value to the field. Such projects might enhance our understanding of central problems in the humanities, raise new questions in the humanities, or develop new digital applications and approaches for use in the humanities. Successful projects must make digital innovations and be significant to the humanities.
