"May the God who gives endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." Romans 15:5-6
Happy September, Families and Friends of ODCA,
Hopefully by now the children are settling back into the school day routines. Certainly the hot, above average temperatures are making it hard to push away images of beaches and pools. We are pleased with the smooth start of the year and joyful faces of the students each morning beginning their school day.

Communication between the school, teachers and parents is a key to a successful year. It is difficult for us to support you or the struggles your child is having without knowing what is going on. We encourage you to email, phone, write notes, or whatever means of communication is necessary to help us partner with you in your child's education this year. I am available to meet with parents on a regular basis so don't hesitate to email me or to contact the office and set up an appointment.

In addition, you are welcome to join any of the open forums with the Principal that we are having during the year. The first one will be Tuesday, September 29th in the library. We are calling it a brown bag lunch forum and encourage you to bring a lunch along and we will share our thoughts, concerns and ideas while we eat lunch. We will continue at different times to have the open forums including a few evening through the year. Your input is very important to us!

Let's work together and be unified in our efforts to make ODCA a school that honors the Lord in all endeavors for His children!
In His Service,
Meg McHale, Principal

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS...
A new Pennsylvania state law requires all public and private school volunteers to obtain background checks. Under amendments to the state Child Protective Services law, all teachers, staff, administrators, contractors and volunteers who come into contact with students must obtain a Criminal Background check and a Child Abuse clearance every 36 months, effective Dec. 31, 2014.
Since we require all our families to serve in some capacity, from chaperoning field trips to completing service hours, we asking all families to complete their clearances. All volunteers will be required to submit the afore-mentioned clearances prior to service at ODCA. Pennsylvania state officials have enacted this law in response to the tragic events that occurred at The Pennsylvania State University. We support this extra measure of safety and of course, desire to follow the law. Therefore, we are asking our parent volunteers to attain the required clearances.
We appreciate the help of our parent volunteers and pray that the new requirements do not deter any one of you in supporting the ministry of ODCA as you have done so faithfully in the past. In support of parent volunteers, Governor Corbett has made these clearances free of charge to you for a limited time.
If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Thomas in the school office. Please note that clearances must be submitted to the school office prior to your service. Parents without clearances WILL NOT be able to participate in school events. If you already have these clearances through service with a church or other volunteer organization, please just make a copy and submit them to the school office. We have several events coming up quickly and this is why we ask for you to get these to us as soon as possible. Please use this website http://keepkidssafe.pa.gov/ as it might help answer some of your concerns.
Respectfully,
ODCA Administration

Information is being sent home with your child about OpenSIS. If you have any questions about accessing your account please call the office.

PARKING LOT NEWS...

Due to the continued excessive heat, the parking lot is taking longer to set than expected. The areas by the entrance will remain closed off until the weather cools a bit to allow it to fully harden. That could be mid to late September. We appreciate your patience as this inconvenience can make it more challenging than usual. The afterschool pick up has improved as the flow of traffic moves around the building at a steady pace.
IMPORTANT: During after school pick up, PLEASE use the outside lane by the grass on the school side to exit the parking lot. Car drivers who try to squeeze by the buses cause a dangerous situation for our students and risk getting a fine as it is illegal to pass loading school buses (even if their lights aren't flashing). We take the safety of the students very seriously and will continue monitoring the parking lot situation.

PIAA FORMS...
Just a reminder that any student participating in ODCA sports must have a current PIAA form on file.  There is a $75.00 sports fee due at the start of each sports season.  If you pay on Smart Tuition you can look in the Shopping Cart Area; there is a section for Add Charges.  You will see a Sports Fee Item for each season.  You can select the Sports Fee - Soccer and pay your fee right from your Smart Account.  Just click which sport you want to pay for and then complete the payment process.  Or you may send in a check payable to Open Door Christian Academy for $75.00

Safety Committee

We would like to establish a safety committee that would meet on a monthly basis. The objective of this committee would be to evaluate the overall safety of the school based on the PA state standards for schools. We would then establish safety procedures, identify areas that need to be addressed immediately and develop long range goals. All parents are invited to be a part of this vital committee and especially those that have background knowledge to contribute. If you are willing and interested to be a part of the committee, please email Principal Meg McHale with your name and the times you would are available for a meeting so we can set up the first meeting in September. mmchale@opendoorchristianacademy.com
