What is a Life Planning Journal?
Greetings!

Our last Newsletter concentrated on convincing our friends on the need of having a Will.  As we progress through the weeks we will share thoughts concerning Revocable Living Trusts, Health Care Surrogate, Power of Attorney, and a myriad of other important topics.  Today we're going to talk about having all your important documents stored in an easily accessible journal.

What is a Life Planning Journal?

Our intention with this journal is to help you establish an easy system in order to store very important documents. We hope to interest newly married couples so that organizing these documents become an everyday way of life, but in reality we know that most folks don't take it seriously until they are in their retirement years.

Why Is This Important?

It's hard to face, but most of the time people don't know when they're going to die. Sometimes it can be in a tragic accident, or it can be due to a debilitating illness. Often the illness comes so quickly that it's impossible to get all the documents together in order for the Executor of an Estate to properly perform his/her duties. It takes more than signing a bunch of papers or establishing an estate plan, and other end of life instructions. The Estate Executor needs to be aware of them and have easy access to them. Family members need to make a lot of quick decisions at the worst possible time when a loved one passes away. The following bullets emphasize why it's absolutely necessary for families to create a culture organizing important documents.

  • Insurers pay claims when beneficiaries come forward. They are not required to take steps to see if a policyholder is still alive.
  • State Treasurers currently hold nearly $32 billion in unclaimed bank accounts and other assets.
  • Establishing an Estate Plan, Power of Attorneys, Wills, Trusts, End of Life Instructions etc. are all important but!!
  • It is nearly impossible for the Executor of an Estate to go through an unorganized pile or drawers full of unorganized documents and find everything that's important.
  • Most of the generation born in the 20's, 30's and 40's keep everything and hides most of them.
  • Don't turn your heirs into detectives waiting for unknown bills and bank statements to arrive through the mail. Some institutions only send statements once a year.
  How Does This Journal Work?

This journal is designed to hold all the documents needed in order to help the Executor of your Estate carry out your wishes in a professional manner. We use sheet protectors not only to protect your important documents, but also to make it very easy to change documents. As an example, you may want to get into the habit of changing bank statements monthly in order to have the most recent at hand. Automobile insurance companies issue new policies every six months so it will be easy to discard the old one and insert the new. The index tabs are our best guess as to what you'll need, but we can customize it to meet your particular needs. Simply mail or email the changes you'd like to have on your index and we'll send you a customized index at no charge. The duties and check list for Estate Executors is in this first section in order to give you an idea how complex this can be and also it can be used to guide your Executor.
