The Feast Of Tabernacles ~ "Celebrating God's Glory"

"The Messianiac Church Arising!" ~ Robert Heidler

Exodus 40:33-35 "The glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. Moses could not enter...because the cloud had settled upon it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle."

John 1:14 "And the Word became flesh and TABERNACLED among us, and we beheld His GLORY."

The climax of God's cycle of blessing is the

Feast of Tabernacles.

Tabernacles, or sukkot, is an appointed time to come boldly into His presence, knowing that every hindrance is removed. It's a time to experience God's glory and joyfully fellowship with Him!

What is the Feast of Tabernacles?

Leviticus 23:34-43 gives instructions for celebrating this feast. God instructs the people to go out into the countryside and cut down palm fronds, leafy branches and poplars. They were to bring these branches back to their homes and build tabernacles, or temporary shelters. In Hebrew, the word for a temporary shelter is sukkah. Sukkot (the plural of Sukkah) is the Hebrew name for this feast.

They were to feast in these shelters for an entire week and rejoice before the LORD!

God instructed them in Exodus 25:8"Live in tabernacles for seven days...so your descendants will know that I had Israelites live in tabernacles when I brought them out of Egypt." When God's people came out of Egypt they lived in tabernacles (sukkot). God told them to build a tabernacle for Him also, so His glory could come down and dwell in their midst.

The Feast of Tabernacles celebrated God's glory living with

His people as they dwelt in tabernacles!

Experiencing His Glory

To understand Tabernacles, we need to understand God's glory. What do we mean when we talk about glory?

Glory is the tangible manifestation of God's presence.

God is always present everywhere, but there are certain times when He reveals His presence in a way that is discernable to our five senses. In Moses' Tabernacle, God's glory was manifested as a shining cloud. At Mt. Sinai, it was revealed in thunder and fire. Sometimes God's presence is evident through miracles and acts of power. Elijah sensed God's presence in a gentle whisper.

Any time you sense God's presence in a tangible way, what you are experiencing is His GLORY. In His presence, everything changes! In God's presence, we find salvation, repentance, empowering, healing, provision, and fulfillment. Most of the significant experiences we have with God take place when His glory comes down.

God doesn't want His glory to be a rare occurrence. He wants us to seek His presence, to dwell in His presence, to live with a continual experience of His power and goodness!

What is a Sukkah?

"The Messianic Church Arising!" ~ Robert Heidler

A sukkah is any kind of temporary shelter: it can be a tent, a lean-to, etc. It can be made of branches, fabric, wood, or other material, but it must be temporary. The sukkah is designed to picture Israel living in temporary shelters when they left Egypt. It also pictures God coming down and dwelling in a temporary shelter with them.

Originally, God told Israel to live in sukkahs the entire week of Tabernacles. Today, many simply spend some time each day in the sukkah, perhaps to eat a meal together as a family.

The celebration of Tabernacles offers a wonderful way to teach children what God has done. Children love to make tents. Can you imagine how excited your kids would be to learn that God has set aside a special time for your whole family to make a tent? God wants you to "make a tent" and use it to teach your children about how God rescued Israel, and how His glory came down and lived with them.

In your sukkah you should include three things:

REMEMBER  that God TABERNACLES with His people.

ENJOY the FUN of celebration with God.

ANTICIPATE God's GLORY!  Ask God to tabernacle with you.  Expect His presence to visit you as you seek Him!

What is a Lulav?

Leviticus 23:40 "On the first day, you must take for yourself a fruit of the citron tree, an unopened palm frond (lulav), myrtle branches, and willows [that grow near] the brook. You shall

rejoice before God for seven days."

"Fruit of goodly trees" refers to the etrog (citron). "Branches of palm trees" refers to the lulav. "Boughs of leafy trees" refers to the myrtle (hadasim). "Willows of the brook" refers to the aravot or hoshanot.

The four are lumped together under the inclusive term lulav, since the lulav is the largest and most prominent. Thus, while the mitzvah is to wave the lulav, this actually refers to the four taken together as one.

The lulav is a single palm branch and occupies the central position in the grouping. It comes with a holder-like contraption (made from its own leaves) which has two extensions. With the backbone (the solid spine) of the lulav facing you and this holder in place near the bottom, two willow branches are placed in the left extension and three myrtle branches are placed in the right. The myrtle should extend to a greater height than the willows.

Shakin' the Lulav (Sukkot song)
Shakin' the Lulav (Sukkot song)

This whole cluster is held in the right hand, the etrog is held in the left, and the two should be touching one another. Some have the custom of picking up the etrog first and then the lulav--reversing the order when putting them down--because the etrog is referred to before the others in the biblical verse.
