Disability Accommodations
thru one person's eyes....

A very lovely lady, who I am proud to call my friend, wrote the following article.  It is written strictly from her point of view but I believe that many of us will agree with what she has to say. Like most things, disability is very personal and we all perceive it differently and require different accommodation.  That said, there are basic requirements that should be adhered to and I think Eileen has expressed this very well.   I am happy to share her thoughts with you. ALASKA GROUP IS HUGE SUCCESS!!!

We have recently returned from our third group trip to Alaska on Royal Caribbean and I'm happy to report that it was a huge success!  Twenty-one of us sailed round-trip Seattle through the inside passage of Alaska.  The majority of our cruisers were first timers.  I love taking the newbies on a cruise and seeing everything through their eyes.  It's like taking a child to Disneyland for the first time and fills me with joy.  I take care of the important details while my husband, Steve, educates everyone on how to properly order food in the dining room and fill their plates in the buffet!  He's even available to teach you how to quickly lose your money in the slot machines. In case you're wondering why someone needs lessons in ordering food, you'll just have to join one of our groups and see for yourself!
We visited Mendenhall Glacier and went whale watching in Juneau, rode the White Pass & Yukon Train in Skagway and had a glorious day at Butchart Gardens in Victoria, B.C.
The famous Butchart Gardens at Victoria B.C.

Deb's Medical Update
& Travel Adventures

I am finally healed!!!  My incision is healed after almost five long months and my surgeon has given me the go ahead to begin the process of being fitted with another prosthesis.  I began physical therapy this week as well to increase my strength so I can handle walking on two prosthetics.  They tell me it takes quite a bit of energy.  I will be learning to walk for the third time in my life.  Another adventure!  I will keep you updated on my progress....

So, I have had two more trips since my last update.  The first was to the Amputee Coalition Conference in Greensboro, NC.  I experienced a not very disability friendly city beginning with the less than adequate restrooms in the airport to the still less than adequate public restrooms at the Sheraton Greensboro.  Had my first experience using the restroom without being able to totally close the door!  When you gotta go, you gotta go!!!  Despite these inconveniences, the trip was awesome because I was with so many of my amputee friends, old and new.  Also got lots of information on being a bilateral amputee and even got to "shop" for feet.  Not as much fun as DSW!
Next trip was flying to Seattle to do the Alaska Cruise.  This time I flew Southwest (which I love) and was able to ride my wheelchair right up to the bulkhead seat.  No aisle chair needed.  I decided to be brave and ask for the onboard chair to use the restroom.  Well, when I stood up to transfer, my prosthesis came off and down I went right onto the bathroom floor.  Not wanting my husband to try and lift me, I asked for a young, strong man to help.  Not only did this work but he was pretty cute as well.  All of this was worth the great time we had with our group in Alaska.  I decided not to try and use the restroom on the flight home.  Notice a theme here?

Just Doing it a little Differently.....

When you sign up for Accessible Allure, Easy Access Travel will donate a portion of our proceeds to the Amputee Coalition.
