Accessible Prague
Steve and I just returned from an incredible two week trip to Eastern Europe including Budapest, a river cruise up the Danube with stops in Bratislavia, Vienna, Salzburg, the Wachau Valley and Passau and then on to Prague. Other than our visit to Prague, the trip was not accessible. Not sure what was worse, the hills or the cobblestones! That said, the trip was definitely worth the effort and I would do it again in a heartbeat. We ended our trip with three days in Prague where I have a colleague who organizes accessible tours for disabled visitors to Prague. We stayed at a lovely fully accessible hotel close to the city center and was provided with the scooter in the picture below and a wheelchair to use in the hotel. Ah, relief at last! The scooter is large in order to accommodate the uneven cobblestones and less than perfect curb cuts. On our first day, our tour guide met us with an accessible vehicle to take us to the Prague Castle which is one of the largest castles and grounds in all of Europe. I managed to see almost everything from the scooter and thoroughly enjoyed not having to walk around. The scenery and architecture was breathtaking. We visited the cathedral and the gardens and eventually made it down the large hill to the city. We then toured the city including the Old Town, City Center, Wenselas Square and the Jewish Quarter. Prague has an abundance of high end stores on beautiful tree lined streets but I preferred the souvenir shops.
Let me know if you would like to visit Prague, you'll be glad you did!
