ALASKA CRUISE 2014 REVIEW
A cruise to Alaska is on many people's Bucket Lists. Filled with magnificent scenery, wildlife, folklore and history, Alaska provides us with an opportunity to commune with nature, ride an historic narrow gauge railroad, see whales up close and more. Our latest Amputee Coalition Travel Adventure set sail with 40 participants, many who were first time cruisers. The cruise was thoroughly enjoyed by all from the food to the entertainment and the fully accessible shore excursions. Our group was comprised of many amputees, people with other mobility limiting disabilities, friends and families. Among us, there were 15 scooter users, 2 who used power wheelchairs, and 3 manual chair users. Scooters and power chairs were all rented from our outstanding travel partner, Special Needs at Sea, and were waiting in the respective cabins upon embarkation. This equipment made navigating around the ship and in the ports "a piece of cake" and enhanced everyone's enjoyment of the cruise.
Royal Caribbean's Accessible Shore Excursions Department helped us plan the accessible shore excursions with lift equipped vehicles and all who wanted to participate were safely and comfortably accommodated. The highlight of the cruise for me and many others was the people, our group members. We truly enjoyed traveling with one another and came home with the best souvenirs of all, new friends. Late Summer Getaways
There is still time to plan a late summer or Labor Day weekend getaway. Why not consider a cruise that departs from a home port within driving distance of where you live? Choose from a mini-cruise or seven night holiday. Take a land trip to San Diego, one of the most wheelchair friendly cities you could ever visit which is filled with amazing opportunities for sightseeing including their world famous zoo. San Diego also has many beaches that provide beach wheelchairs and most hotels now have lifts for pool access. There is always the ever popular trip to Las Vegas, another destination which is very accessible to all. Visit a city that you haven't been to yet, go to one of our stunning National Parks, stay home and check out tourist destinations in the city where you live. I bet you haven't been to most of them. Plan a weekend where you are a "tourist" in your own city, visit museums and other attractions and eat in restaurants you haven't previously tried. Everyone should put a little "adventure" in their lives!
