January 30, 2015

Dear Community Leader,

As students returned to classes after the holidays, we began looking ahead to some of the milestones that will take place this spring.

In June, the largest ever number of students will graduate in Belton ISD. Belton High School is expected to have 626 graduates, and Belton New Tech High School @Waskow anticipates handing out 104 diplomas to their first graduating class.

This class - the Class of 2015 - is the first one required to pass five end-of-course exams to receive a diploma. To date 96.6% of Belton ISD's seniors have successfully completed all five of the required exams. For comparison, the statewide average is currently 90.3%. Our number will continue to grow as students have additional opportunities to take and pass the end-of-course exams this semester.

It's not just our seniors who are outperforming their peers around the state.

The BHS Academic UIL Team opened the semester with strong performances at the Burnet and Lampasas Academic Tournaments. In Burnet, our accounting team placed first, current events and issues placed first, and number sense placed second. In Lampasas, accounting placed first again, number sense placed first, and current events and issues placed second. I can't wait to see how they do next month at the tournaments hosted by Midway and Westwood High Schools.

Our swimmers just returned from the District 12-6A meet where the boys and girls both won their third district championship in as many years. The Lady Tigers won 10 of the 11 events at the district meet, and the Tigers clinched their championship with a win in the 400-freestyle relay, which was the final event of the meet. Both teams now head to the regional meet in Rockwall next weekend.

I recently saw a preview of this year's musical, "Little Shop of Horrors." We have some incredibly talented performers, and this is going to be a fun production. I hope that you'll attend one of the performances next week. For more information or to purchase tickets, you can click on the graphic below.

Our students excel both in and out of the classroom.

Their success is due in no small part to the support of our community. Because of your support, our high school students can choose from 94 career and technical education courses, 57 advanced placement and dual credit courses, and 22 fine arts and humanities courses. Because of you, every student has an opportunity to graduate high school with skills that employers need and to start college ahead of their peers. Because of you, every student has a chance to find their passion and follow it.

Sincerely,

Susan Kincannon, Ed.D.

Superintendent

Message from the Board President:

We are Planning to Meet our Mission!

The mission of Belton ISD is to provide an education that challenges all of our students to excel.  In order to meet that mission we must continue to grow with our community and keep pace with our growing student population.

Growth of new housing areas in Belton ISD is projected to continue for the foreseeable future so our community and school district must plan ahead in order to provide adequate facilities for the students we will have in coming years.  Effective strategic planning is critical to making wise decisions about meeting our future needs.

For many years we have utilized a large, inclusive gathering of parents, teachers and community members to explore options and determine how and when to build additional school facilities.  We have scheduled the next round of Long-Range Facilities Planning Committee meetings to plan ahead for how to meet our future needs, especially for high school students. Meetings are scheduled for February 10, March 10, March 31, April 21,  and May 12 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the Administration Building.

In order for this process to work effectively, we need people willing to work together to study, discuss and consider options.  Our goal is to have representation from all areas of our community as we work through this process.  These meetings are open to all and we are asking for your involvement.  Please join us in planning so that we can continue to meet our mission.

Thank you for your continued support of our schools!

I Love Belton!
