NSP Gives Brothers a

Safe Place to Call Home

NSP HaysBrothers William and Samuel Hays were delighted to close on their NSP home in Lehigh Acres this month.   For them, the home and neighborhood represent a vast improvement.  William's son, Bill Hays said that their old Fort Myers neighborhood didn't feel safe anymore.  He was excited to learn about the Neighborhood Stabilization through reading an article in the local paper.

"The NSP Program is great for people with a fixed or low income," said Bill Hays.  "Otherwise it would be nearly impossible to get a loan for a house.  Not only that, but this home is bigger and newer than where they were before-twice as big and located in a better and safer neighborhood."

Hays noted that the people who assisted them through the NSP process were both knowledgeable and helpful.  While he is very pleased that his Dad and Uncle will have more room and solid hurricane protection, there is one feature that they are especially appreciative of right now.  "The old home had wall units for air conditioning, and they really didn't cool things off much in the summer," added Hays.  "Having central air will be a real pleasure.  This is a super nice house."

Summer Home Maintenance Tips

PruningLike a car, your home needs regular maintenance and occasional tune-ups to stay in tip-top shape. Home improvement experts recommend that you create a calendar to take on regular maintenance projects throughout the year.   Here are a few suggestions for summer to keep your yard healthy and your home cool.

Outdoor Tasks:

***Clean and care for decks, patios, or porches. Look for peeling paint, sagging roofs, and damaged stairs. Make sure the supports are not broken, weakened, or rotted out.

***Clean or power-wash your home's siding.
***Prune trees and shrubs.
***Remove lint from dryer exhaust vent with a long, flexible brush.
***Test and lubricate garage doors.

***This is also a good time to clean out all that clutter that seems to accumulate in garages.
***Check your home's crawlspace (if it has one) for water damage, animals, or other foreign matter.

Indoor Tasks:
***Change or clean heating, ventilating and air conditioning filters.
***Clean kitchen appliances inside and out, including refrigerator coils.
***Maintain clean drains by adding a half-cup of baking soda followed by a half-cup of white vinegar. After 10 minutes, flush with boiling water.
***Drain or flush water heater.
***Check your dishwasher. Look for any signs of leaks under or around it. Check to see that the washer arm isn't stuck by opening the dishwasher and spinning and lifting the washer arm. Make sure the drain hose arcs up to prevent backwash from the drain into the dishwasher.
***Remove showerheads and clean them to remove any sediment buildup.
***Replace flashlight batteries.
***Change furnace filters.
***Test carbon monoxide and smoke detectors and replace batteries or devices if necessary.
