PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE   NEWS

Dear Fellow Members:

As I write this,
I think about how our Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup (in a most amazing but improbable fashion!) for the 2nd time in three years.  As a longtime fan, player and official, I’m extremely gratified by this outstanding achievement.  But more importantly, as SIORs, we have something in common with them: we are the best of the best in our field, and we continue raising the bar by performing AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL for our clients!

To minimize the email traffic that already bombards us daily, we decided to switch to an every-other-month issue of our Chicago Chapter Newsletter.  This format still allows us to provide timely information and great content to both our membership and our sponsors, without compromising any features.  Please don’t hesitate to provide us with your feedback on this new initiative.

As most of you probably know, on May 28th one of our own, Steve Goode, embarked solo on a 12,000+ mile continental U.S. motorcycle trip.  Appropriately named Steve’s Four Corner Tour, check out his blog at http://fourcornerstour.wordpress.com/ where he’s posting his experiences almost daily, along with incredible photos.  Example: Getting faced with bird poop when his helmet visor was up - tough lesson learned!  Ironically, it happened near Bodega, CA, the town made famous by Hitchcock’s “The Birds”.

Here’s what’s happened in the last 60 days, as well as what’s in store:

  • At our May 28th luncheon, former Chicago Bear great Gary Fencik regaled us with wonderful “inside” stories of his playing days and the ’85 Super Bowl Champion team, while also providing good lessons to apply in our daily practices.
  • On June 13th, thanks to the leadership efforts of Dan Smolensky, SIOR, with top support from Executive Director Joanne Works, the Chapter hosted a Young Professionals recruiting event at the Seven-Ten Lounge and bowling alley in Lincoln Park.  Attended by a good number of rising broker stars and a few gray-hairs like Yours Truly, a great time was had by all!
  • On July 18th we convened once again at Cantigny Golf for our Annual SIOR Chicago Chapter Golf Outing. Despite the weather, it was a great day!
  • On October 24th – 26th, the 2013 SIOR Fall World Conference will take place at the Hyatt Regency Chicago Hotel. Be sure to put this in your calendar and register early to attend the best benefit of your SIOR membership. Your Chapter leadership is working diligently with other SIOR Chapter leaders and our national staff to create outstanding content in the form of breakout sessions, educational opportunities and practical roundtables.  If you have any ideas on what you’d like to see, let us know, as there’s still some time left before we finalize the program in the next few weeks.

Enjoy the rest of your summer and continue to perform at the highest level for your clients and customers.

Warm regards,

David L. Liebman, SIOR, JD, LEED Green Associate

2013 SIOR Chicago Chapter President

Congratulations Chicago Chapter, We Donated 16 Trunks!

See our NBC TV news clip by clicking here

We’re delighted to report that the members of the SIOR Chicago Chapter raised a total of sixteen (16) $500 Trunk Scholarships to support the Ada S. McKinley College-Bound Trunk Scholarship program for 2013! In this third year of our Chapter’s support of this worthwhile charitable initiative, we achieved our largest donation to date.

We are pleased to recognize the following member companies that donated full $500 trunks toward this effort in 2013 – ARCO/MURRAY(2), IDI, The McShane Companies, Meridian Design/Build, ML Realty Partners, Newmark Grubb Knight Frank, Paine/Wetzel / TCN Worldwide, Venture One Real Estate, Duke Realty, CenterPoint, Arthur J. Rogers and NAI Hiffman.

Additional corporate contributors included Colliers International, Nugent Curtis Real Estate, Epstein, Krusinski Construction Company, The Modal Group and Op2mize. In addition, the generous out-of-pocket donations received from SIOR members provided the additional funding that allowed us to reach this amount. Students receiving the Ada S. McKinley Trunk Scholarships are selected based upon the submission of a written essay describing how the Trunk Scholarship award would allow them to be suitably prepared to enter their first year of college.

May Program

Gary Fencik, former Chicago Bears Superbowl Champion, spoke to the audience of SIORs about attributes and lessons he’s learned that have led to his personal success. Having played for the Chicago Bears for 12 years and one of the most accomplished speakers in football, he also talked about the ‘85 Bears players then and where they are today. Gary is a Yale & Northwestern Graduate and currently the partner and head of business development at Adams Street Partners.

YP Recruitment Bowling Event

The annual YP and member recruitment event was held at Seven Ten Lounge in Lincoln Park. The networking event included some friendly competition along with food and drinks. Dan Smolensky, SIOR Chicago Chapter YP and Recruiting Chair organized the event and spoke with the guests about the benefits of the organization and how it has assisted in the growth of his company. He briefed them on the new candidacy program and its advantages for those prospects who may not yet qualify for the designation.
