"What do I have to do, be or have in order to keep growing?"
Charity begins at home. And when it comes to changing your life, it starts from the inside out.

Believe Differently
|
You have to believe in yourself - Sun Tzu
The second question that could change your life is: "what do you have to believe differently in order to make the picture you have of your ideal life come alive?"
Whether it's your own voice or that of a parent or teacher from long ago, the things you constantly hear in your head have great influence on the results you achieve in your life.
In order to address this question, begin by listening to the voices in your head. Are they affirming, empowering, encouraging, believing, and applauding? Or are they demeaning, belittling voices, telling you that you are a victim?
Here is a four point plan to deal with negative self talk: listen, assess replace and do.
- Truly listen to the talk inside your head. Commonly we don't pay attention to our thoughts, they just come and go automatically, and that is how they control our lives. Gain awareness of what that voice is saying. Is it saying the same thing over and over again? How is it making you feel? Often we don't focus consciously on what our inner voice is saying; simply accepting its judgment as the truth, and this is where many of us get stuck, sometimes for our whole lives.
- Second, assess your inner voice. Learn to recognize the forms it takes: maybe it gets nervous, angry, pitiful, or frightened? Is there a hint of a positive voice trying to gain strength over the negative one? If there is, try to focus and listen to that background positive chat more and more every time you hear it. With practice, you will eventually hear it all the time. Your inner critic is just a habit of your mind and that you can easily change the station to listen to a different tune, one that makes you feel good, energized, and proud about yourself and your life.
- After consciously recognizing, listening, and evaluating your inner critic, start replacing negative talk with positive one. Surround yourself with people who engage in positive talk, so that you get positive messages from within and without. Seek out people who can help you see things differently, people who engage in possibilities thinking, rather than fixating on limitations. Give the good talk space to speak to you, and encourage it through positive affirmations, until you feel the change inside yourself. For example, every time you identify the negative talk nagging you with something like "I can't do anything right", instantly change that into a positive affirmation, like "Everything I do turns out right". And every time you use a positive affirmation focus on how it makes you feel.
- But don't stop at affirmations. Start doing things you didn't believe you could.
Imagine that what you believe about yourself is a radio broadcast.
To hear something different you can reach out and change the station.
Sometimes you catch another station easily, but sometimes you have to tune back and forth, adjust the aerial, or reposition the radio in order to get a clear signal. If you are not getting results quickly, make small adjustments until you get it right.
