Idea to Action

 - a newsletter for people who want to design the lives and  small business they really want

Issue 95

 17 January 2013

 Greetings!  ,

Being yourself shouldn't be a struggle, because that's who you are meant to be.

When  you accept someone else's definition of who you should be, you give power over you.  If you don't invest in  knowing  and accepting yourself,  you diminish your ability to grow.

Take a stand for YOU starting today.

Regards,

BEING YOURSELF IS MORE FULFILLING
know yourself
Be yourself; everyone else is already taken - Oscar Wilde

The people whizzing by, seemingly effortlessly don't have an easier time. Their energies are better attuned to their goals. They are running with purpose. They are not pretending to be someone they are not. Of course it is also highly likely that they have trained better- not necessarily harder, or for a longer period - than you. They understand their weaknesses and have built on their strengths. Their energy is focused on being themsleves.

'Be yourself' is probably one of the most cliché pieces of advice ever. Yet many people struggle with being themselves, often confusing it with being likeable, or popular. Here are 7 reasons why you might struggle being yourself:

  1. You don't accept yourself. Oscar Wilde's 'Be yourself; everyone else is already taken' may be humorous, but it is also a basic truth. Yet, you can't be yourself if you don't know, understand, and accept yourself first. Taking the time to dwell on your values and to consider what makes up the essence of who you are is a worthy exercise. Especially if you have been feeling kind lost, or stuck, or, as they say 'out of sorts'.
  2. You let one moment in the past define you. So you made a mistake, who doesn't? So someone hurt you, will you let them continue hurting you by dwelling on it? Fixating on the past stops you growing. Forgive past errors and past behaviors you're not so proud of. You had your reasons for the choices you made in the past, and your decisions made sense at the time. Allow yourself to learn their lessons and continue to grow.
  3. You take yourself too seriously. Relax. Stop worrying about the worst that could happen, especially in social situations. So what if you fall flat on your face? Or get spinach stuck in your teeth? Laughing at yourself is a great stress buster. As Richard Carlson says, "don't sweat the small stuff...and it's all small stuff."
