| Your Vote Counts |
|
On September 27, a primary election was held for City of Knoxville officials and to fill the 6th district Tennessee Senate seat formerly held by Jamie Woodson. For a non-presidential election, the turnout for this election was even lower than usual. However, as the press has reported, this election showed how important EVERY vote is. A handful of votes kept Madeline Rogero from achieving the 50% plus 1 vote, which was needed to avoid a runoff for mayor. Also in the mayor's race, less than 60 votes separated the 2nd and 3rd candidate -- determining that Mark Padgett will face-off against Madeline Rogero in the November 8th election.
For those who are concerned about education in the state of Tennessee, the election for the 6th District Senate seat is especially important. The state legislature could vote on many key issues in the next legislative session, so if you live in the 6th District it is important to know where your candidate stands on educational issues. Republican Becky Duncan Massey will face Democrat Gloria Johnson. This spring, our representatives could be voting on issues such as appointed vs. elected superintendents, vouchers, and local vs. state approved charter schools.
So, what can you do to become more informed before you vote on November 8th:
- If unsure of which district you live in, you can CLICK HERE to find who represents you.
- Attend or watch the televised debates.
- Whether you like to get your news from a paper or online -- both the Knoxville News-Sentinel and Metro Pulse carry information on the candidates. Smaller papers like The Shopper also carry candidate information.
- Before going to the polls on November 8th, do a little research and make sure your vote counts!
