Calamity Days are here for one more year
The first snow of the year brings with it much anticipation for a "Snow Day." Statewide the media is reporting changes in legislation because of last year's record-breaking cold and snowfall. Instead of requiring schools to complete a minimum number of days per school year, state law will allow schools to fulfill a minimum number of hours. The change from days to hours does not apply to school districts with collective bargaining agreements that were executed prior to July 1, 2014.
Due to the district's calendar and union agreement being approved before the passage of the new legislation, Kenston will use Calamity Days for the 2014/2015 school year as stipulated by state law.
Kenston has nine (9) days before we are required to make-up days. They include five (5) Calamity Days per Ohio Department of Education regulations, an additional one (1) day in the district's calendar plus the option for three (3) additional days with the completion of on-line Blizzard Bag assignments.
The safety of our staff and students is always our top priority. We will continue to work with local road departments, law enforcement and school personnel to assess the conditions before making the decision to cancel school. Staff will continue to receive notification through the AlertNOW calling system, district and high school web pages, Twitter @KenstonSchools or by calling the School Closing Hotline at 440-564-2134.

One School One Book kicks-off
Look what I have! Timmons kindergartner proudly shows off her own copy of, The Cricket in Times Square, by George Seldon, a gift from the PTO. Kenston's Timmons Elementary School kicked-off their sixth annual One School One Book program during an assembly with a skit including musicians from the Cleveland Institute of Music and local Accent on Youth performers. This giant book club has connections in all parts of the curriculum through daily announcements, trivia, vocabulary, a service learning project and online interactive dialogue with one of the main characters. #1 Dog Essay Contest
Kenston Intermediate School fourth grader, Annie Costello's dog, Hope, was selected as the Number 1 Dog in Geauga County based on her winning essay sponsored by Geauga County Auditor Frank Gliha. The contest was open to any fourth or fifth grade student in the county to kick-off the 2015 Dog Registration in Geauga County. Annie's teacher, Mrs. Josephina Ventimiglia, encouraged her students to participate in this writing contest.
