Herbert Dean Golding, 79, of Michigan City, Indiana, passed away peacefully at 1:40 p.m., Thursday, May 24, 2012 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory is caring for the arrangements.

He was born February 9, 1933 in North Judson, Indiana, to Herbert A. and Lily Engelthaler Golding.

Mr. Golding graduated from Knox High School in 1951. Dean came to Michigan City in 1957 and remained there until his death. He worked for Sears and Kingsbury Ordinance Plant prior to joining the Navy in 1953. Dean achieved the rank of Personnelman 2nd Class, serving on board the USS Twining (DD540) and at the US Naval Air Station in Kingsville, Texas. He proudly participated in the Boy Scouts for over 55 years, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout in 1949. Dean was involved with the Boy Scouts serving on many levels, including Scoutmaster for Troop 18 and Unit Commissioner from 1961 until present. For his service in the Scouts, he was honored with many awards, including the Silver Beaver Award. Dean was affectionately known by his scouts as "the knot man." He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, Michigan City where he taught Sunday school to 3rd and 4th graders for over 12 years. Dean enjoyed reading, working with various puzzles and traveling. He specialized in tying knots, sailing and throwing tomahawks. He dearly loved his family, his country and his church and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

On April 20, 1991 in Michigan City, he married Ressa J. Delco, who survives.

Survivors also include three daughters, Susan (Steve) Siebenmark of Three Oaks, Michigan, Beth and Golding of Michigan City, Lenette Golding of Atlanta, Georgia; his former spouse, LaDonna Layson of Michigan City; two grandchildren, Michael and Nicole Siebenmark; one sister, Roberta Hoffman of Mishawaka, Indiana; one nephew, Mark Salyers of Chicago, Illinois; four step-children, Jackie (Roy) Cohen of Michigan City, Deborah (Tim) Jones of La Porte, Quentin (Karen) Frost of Pasadena, California and Staci (Sean) O'Bryan of Anderson, Indiana; nine step-grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 2, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church, 121 E. 7th Street, Michigan City. A visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the First United Methodist Church. Cremation will take place and private burial of ashes will be held at a later date.
