When Dr. Kathy Koch and I were writing No More Perfect Kids, we built the book around core questions kids ask deep in their hearts. In addition to Do you like me? Am I important to you? Am I a failure? and several others, one of those questions is What's my purpose?

This is a question we started asking ourselves during our growing up years and a question many of us are still asking ourselves today.  Considering that Rick Warren's book The Purpose-Driven Life has sold over 32 million copies over the past 10 years, I think it's evident this is a question many of us are seeking to answer.

As you and I think about purpose in our lives as moms, we need to explore our purpose from God's perspective, as a mom, and as the unique person we were created to be.

My Purpose from God's Perspective

You and I were not created for this world. We are actually created for eternity (Tweet This!). This world is simply the place God uses to connect us to Himself. Our job is to respond to Him and grow to be more like Him each and every day, knowing that our relationship will continue even beyond our time on this earth.

My Purpose as a Mom

You and I are created for relationship.  First with God and then with others.  If you're married, your purpose as a wife is to be a life partner and a lover. Our purpose as it relates to being a mom includes all of the hats we wear every day: teacher, nurse, cook, leader, accountant, taxi driver, comforter, counselor, confidant, encourager, hostess, launderer, interior decorator, and more! In addition to that, your purpose as a mom includes relationships with other moms. We need each other along the journey of motherhood!

My Purpose as a Unique Human Being

You and I are created uniquely. Those unique qualities are part of our purpose in life.  Maybe you're creative, organized, musical, or artistic.  Maybe you're a good listener, compassionate, or a natural leader. Maybe you're a problem solver, a cheerleader, a strategist, or you're known as someone who could sell ice to an Eskimo! Using those skills in your home, family, and circle of influence is living out your purpose!

If you've been struggling to find purpose in your life, struggle no more.  You and I were created on purpose with purpose (Tweet this!).  My prayer is that you will embrace, celebrate, and love your purpose in this world because there's no one else that can be a better you than you!

Discovering Your Purpose

The first step in discovering your purpose is finding forgiveness in God, and resting in His truth. To partner with you in this process, we are delighted to offer a free chapter from Jill Savage's book, Real Moms, Real Jesus.

Chapter 6

"The Truth About Forgiveness"

I now describe it as one of our worst arguments.  During the first ten years of our marriage, Mark and I argued a lot.  Usually we both sinned in our anger.  We would say things that we'd regret in the morning.  During this particular argument Mark said a lot of hurtful things to me.  But in a rare departure from my usual behavior, I had refrained from throwing verbal bombs back at him.  I was trying to learn self-control and how to fight fair and I seemed to have an extra strength that empowered me with self-control this particular evening.  Mark was also learning new ways to handle our conflict and behave differently during disagreements, and he had done well in several disagreements, but this particular evening he had fallen back into old habits.

Mark's words stung as he lobbed them my way.  I chose to remain quiet except to calmly communicate my feelings and perspectives and occasionally draw a boundary in our communication.  I finally left him in his rage and moved to a different part of the house, refusing to engage in anymore of his verbal tirade.  We went to bed angry, sleeping in different rooms of the house.

The next morning, a very different man approached me.  He was humble and repentant.  God had gotten a hold of him and he had responded to God's conviction.  "Jill, I need to talk to you," he began.  "I'm so very sorry for the things I said to you last night.  I was wrong and my behavior was wrong.  I know I hurt you and for that, I'm very, very sorry.  Will you please forgive me?"

A Hearts at Home Mom Loves Her Purpose

"One night I made candied cabbage and kale for dinner. The next night as I served asparagus, cooked carrots & leftover cabbage for dinner my 2 young sons asked, 'Are you mad at us? I think this is what they feed bad guys in jail.'"

~ Laura, mom to 2 girls and 2 boys

Gotta Minute?

Let's face it. A mom's life is busy. Sometimes all we have is one minute - just 60 seconds to catch our breath, visit the bathroom, scarf down some lunch and get ready for what's next in our day. But what if that same minute could bring a quick dose of encouragement to your busy life?

Our HeartBeat radio program offers just that - pertinent, practical snippets that will challenge, motivate and inspire you to tame the temper tantrums, make a memory or just embrace the moment you are in.

HeartBeat currently airs on over 40 radio stations across the United States. To see a full list of stations that air HeartBeat, and to listen to some sample programs, click here.
