Make Your Mark! Wins Statewide Award from American Planning Association PA Chapter

The Make Your Mark! Lower Lancaster Revitalization Plan recently received a statewide planning award from the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA-PA). The APA-PA selected Make Your Mark! as the winner of the 2013 PA Chapter Award in the category of Planning Excellence - Public Outreach. This award was presented at last week's APA-PA Annual Conference in Harrisburg, where over 400 planners and community development professionals gathered from across the state.

"We are extremely honored to be recognized by the APA," says Kira Strong of PECCDC (pictured above with PA Chapter of APA President Brian O'Leary). The neighborhood plan, compiled with the assistance of Interface Studio and informed by over 1,000 residents, local businesses, and community stakeholders, serves as a tool for community development in the around Lower Lancaster Avenue for the next five years.

This plan was funded through a grant provided by the Wells Fargo Regional Foundation, who also recently awarded PECCDC implementation funding to make this community vision a reality.
PECCDC Breaks Ground on Bigham Place

PECCDC recently broke ground on Bigham Place, a new construction development for formerly homeless women with special needs and their children. This project will transform 4226-32 Powelton Avenue, a large vacant lot in West Powelton, into 7 units of affordable housing targeted at households earning 60 percent of the area median income or less. This project also includes the renovation of an adjacent three-story building at 4231 Filbert Street, which will include 4 additional apartments targeted at households earning 20 percent of the area median income or less.

Bigham Place will include on-site case management to ease the transition from emergency shelter to individual units. These staff will work one-on-one with the single mothers and their children to connect them to PEC and other service providers for counseling, job training, childcare, skills training and health care assistance. For more information on this project please contact Stephanie Wall at [email protected].

Green Tips

RECYCLE! Not only does recycling conserve our natural resources, it also creates jobs. According to the EPA, "incinerating 10,000 tons of waste creates one job; land-filling 10,000 tons of waste creates six jobs; recycling 10,000 tons of waste creates 36 jobs." It takes significantly less energy to make new products out of recycled material which benefits the planet as a whole. According to the World Watch Institute, "recycling aluminum cans in the US in 1996 saved enough energy to power a city the size of Philadelphia for one year." Imagine how much energy we could save today by recycling even more!
