Local Charities Named Beneficiaries of 2015 Contest
Besides hosting the best kid's surf contest ever...we're also committed to raising funds for charity with the net proceeds from our annual April event.  This year our surf club members have designated four charities to receive funding - all great causes that relate to our kids, the ocean, and our local environment.  We're proud to announce our 2014 Contest beneficiaries:

Natural High -a Natural High Logo (San Diego based) drug abuse prevention organization that helps empower youth to discover and pursue what they truly love to do, so they say no to an artificial high.

Scripps Oceanography Logo Scripps Institute of Oceanography  in support of important climate research.  We support the ongoing efforts of Scripps scientists to conduct research at sites around the world to collect and publish this important data. We support donating to (unrestricted) funds that will meet Scripps' most pressing needs, including support for students, research, campus infrastructure, and faculty.

San Diego Junior Lifeguard Foundation supports the summer Junior Lifeguard program of the City of San Diego.  Many of our kids have benefited from this valuable program that teaches ocean awareness and important lifesaving skills and knowledge that have helped a new generation be safe in the ocean.  Our funding helps support scholarships for kids who can't afford the fees.

Friends of La Jolla Shores, with help from private funding, installed the new North Kellogg Park Comfort Station! La Jolla Shores Surfing Association raised funds to support the surf mural and dolphin mosaic tile adornment on the public restroom walls and running through the showers. Check it out.   Please help us raise the final $1,500 to finish this project!  Support the project by making a donation directly to the  "Friends of La Jolla Shores" for the "surf mural project." Our surf club will match your donation to this project so shoot Lorraine an email letting us know so we can match your contribution!

We thank all of you for your support in helping us give back to the community!

Surf Art Contest Welcomes Entries!
Annual Art Show at La Jolla Riford Library in April

Every year, our surf club sponsors an Art Contest for youth ages 18 & under. The grand prize winner receives $100 and will have their artwork adorn our 2015 Menehune Contest event t-shirts. The top 40 entries will be exhibited at the La Jolla Riford Library during April.

Last year's Grand Prize Winner was Maddie Troyan, of Parkway Middle School in La Mesa (pictured).   Her artwork best illustrated our contest: kids surfing the Shores and having fun!  There's still time to enter the 2015 Surf Art Contest! The deadline has been extended to Friday, March 13, 2015.  For more info download this flyer.  Please contact Alex Furuholmen for more information.

La Jolla Shores surf club will attend the Rincon Invitational
The Groundswell Society is pleased to announce that the 8th Rincon Invitational will be held the weekend of March 14 & 15 2015.

Over the years the Invitational has earned a unique reputation for giving teams of surfers with outstanding public service records the opportunity to surf some of California's best waves for an hour to themselves... We're making the road trip to this special break to share in the aloha spirit with the other clubs and groups gathered there.  If you would like to join us as a "team member" for this special event, please contact Surf Club President Lorraine Schmalenberger asap: 858.692.5235. We still have a few spots - $50 fee required. Thanks!
Surfing Veterans to be Honored by La Jolla Shores
Our surf club is proud to announce that we will be hosting surfing veterans as our special guests at this year's Menehune Surf Contest April 25, 2015. These special warriors have been invited to surf in two "adaptive athlete" heats which we will be showcasing at our event, while we pay tribute to these special men and women who served our country.  Pictured at left is the special adaptive surfboard our club sponsored and gifted to the Torrey Pines Christian Church Surf Ministry. They work with the veterans at the Naval Hospital Clinic. If you'd like to get more involved, please contact Bob Bishop, surf club member.  Pictured at left are surf club members with the adaptive surfboard we donated last year, with surfing veteran Chris Small, now a regular at the Shores!

You can sea that we've got lots going on,  and we invite all of you to get involved - in our Menehune Surf Contest, our Art Contest, as a volunteer, club member, sponsor, surf team member, or in any capacity - we welcome each and everyone of you!

Sincerely,

Lorraine Schmalenberger, President, La Jolla Shores Surfing Association: lorraine@ljssa.org 858.692.5235
