Happy New Year!

Greetings and Happy New Year!  Thanks to all of you who turned out for our Annual Holiday Party and Door of Faith Baja Orphanage Drive in December. We had a blast - and are looking for help to take our items to Baja in January.  Contact me if you'd like to go on a day surf trip, an orphanage visit, and lunch.

Everyone is invited to my favorite surf club event this week: Our Annual New Years Day Potluck. Bring a friend, bring a dish, and come meet your fellow surfers.  We so often take each other for granted and it's nice to socialize when we're not competing for waves!

We're proud to sponsor a surf team and the LJSSA team attended 7 coalition contests sponsored by our good friends in other surf clubs in 2014.  Congratulations to Ava Verbrugghen who won our MVP honors for her top finishes in both the Menehune and Jr. Women division in 2014.  We welcome you all to get involved.

We invite you to donate to the newly constructed North Kellogg Park comfort station. Our surf club is raising the final funds for the mosaic tiles that adorn the building.

SAVE the Date - Saturday, April 25, 2015 will be our 15th Annual Menehune Surf Contest.  We're excited to announce our 2015 Charity recipients.

As the sun sets on 2014, and the northwest swell season revs up, I am thankful for our beautiful beach and a community of surfers and friends to share it with.  Enjoy, and SEA you out surfin'!

New Years Day Potluck Thursday - Jan 1, 2015 - You're All Invited!
It's an annual tradition with our surf club, and everyone is included: THURS., January 1, 2015 @ 9AM on the boardwalk in front of Dave's truck (just north of Tower 32).  Bring a dish to share and enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow surfers.  We gather on the beach @ 10 AM for our annual photo (above), featured on our website and facebook page.  For more information, contact Club President: [email protected].

Donations to Friends of La Jolla Shores encouraged

La Jolla Shores Surfing Association helped to design and fund the beautiful mosaic tile installations on the comfort station walls.  The bottlenose dolphine (pictured above - in the public showers) and the surfboards with surfing etiquette tiles (pictured below on the south facing wall) have been a welcome addition at La Jolla Shores beach.   For more information about the project, and to to make a donation, please visit their website: Friends of La Jolla Shores

Save the Date: Saturday, April 25, 2015 - Annual Menehune Surf Contest!
Mark your calendars for our 15th Annual Menehune Surf Contest for youth ages 18 & under in longboard, shortboard, and novice divisions.  If you can contribute to the event with your time, talent, or resources, please contact Contest Director Stephanie Hoffman to help; [email protected].  Our 2015 beneficiaries include some worthy causes and projects which we're proud to support with the net proceeds from our event: Natural High, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, Junior Lifeguard Foundation, and Friends of La Jolla Shores.

Looking for Shores Surfing Photos - Send us Yours!
Surf Club to start online collection

La Jolla  Shores has a rich surfing heritage dating back decades, but the images that remain are hidden in old scrapbooks, and archives of those who graced the Shores before out time.  We'd like to dig up that past and celebrate those who made surfing history here. Tom Keck, surf photographer, kindly sent us this iconic shot of Shores local Dicky Moon, circa 1964.  We plan to post our collection online and a few have heeded the call. Send us your photos - and identify the surfers and the photographer so we may give credit.  Contact Surf Club President Lorraine Schmalenberger if you can help us find people to contribute. Thanks!

New adaptive surfboard ready for use!

Surf Club members (L to R) Dave McLeod, Bob Bishop, Lorraine Schmalenberger, and Donnie Laughlin (far right) are joined by Chris Small, amputee and veteran warrior, with new adaptive surfboard - shaped by Hank Warner and funded by La Jolla Shores Surfing Association for the Torrey Pines Surfing Ministry that works with veterans at the Naval Hospital.  This is one of many projects we have funded with proceeds from our Annual Menehune Surf Contest. Reports Chris, an accomplished surfer - "the board works great!"
I look forward to 'sea-ing' you and surfing with you in 2015!

Sincerely,

Lorraine Schmalenberger, President, La Jolla Shores Surfing Association: [email protected]
