IF you haven't done so already, you may still register online using PayPal from our website. Deadline is midnight on Monday, April 21. We still have space in a few divisions and others are already full. Late entries will need to be cleared with Contest Director and will be charged a $10 late fee.

We've got a great day of fun for the entire family. Kids will be competing in longboard, shortboard, and novice divisions, ages 18 & under. We have special heats planned for surfing parents - "DOG" (Dads of Groms) and "MOB" (Mothers on Board).

Volunteers Welcome!

We depend on volunteers to help us host a successful contest - we've still got work to be done, so consider volunteering.  We use volunteers for everything - setup, judging, water patrol, tallying, registration,  BBQ, raffle booth, and cleanup.  Please contact Stephanie Hoffman, Contest Director, if you can donate a few hours of your time: stephanie@ljssa.org. We'll be hosting a pre-event gathering for all our volunteers this WED. April 23 @ 6pm, at Bird's Surf Shed.  Pizza and drinks provided.  Come join us! Please RSVP to Lorraine if you plan on attending: 858.692.5235

Donations Welcome! Sponsor a Surfer

We depend on our generous sponsors to help us host this  contest and raise funds for charity.  Thanks to all who have contributed to the cause. It's not too late to give - we welcome gifts of ANY KIND to feature in our raffle - we give away prizes every hour starting around 11 am and announce our sponsors over the loudspeaker.  We encourage those of you who can to donate $60 or more to help us cover entry fees for families that have fallen on tough times. (sponsor a surfer option available on PayPal) No one is turned away for their inability to pay - so let us know if you can help a family with their entry fees.  Please contact Lorraine Schmalenberger (tel: 858.692.5235)  immediately, if you can help with a donation of any kind.  Thank you!

Gathering of the Crew for a Good Cause...donations to charities

We're proud of our good record of giving - all the proceeds from this contest will benefit charities which our surf club members support. This year's beneficiaries include:

Friends of La Jolla Shores for installation of an educational surfer's wall on the north comfort station in Kellogg Park.

Natural High is a (San Diego based) drug abuse prevention organization that helps youth discover, amplify and pursue their natural high so that they have a reason to say no to an artificial high.

San Diego Junior Lifeguard Foundation in support of scholarships for summer camps for families who can't afford to pay.

Scripps Institute of Oceanography to support the important research of the iconic 'Keeling curve', a 55-year record of rising atmospheric carbon dioxide levels.

Torrey Pines Christian Church Surf Ministry, in support of their wounded warrior program with the Naval Hospital Surf Clinic.

Randy Abbott, Veteran and paraplegic surfer

Randy Abbott to be featured speaker at Awards Ceremony
We're proud to bring motivational speakers to our kids at the surf contest and this year, we're excited to welcome Randy Abbott. Randy is a Wounded Warrior, a positive role model and makes everyone around him a better person. Randy has surfed some of the biggest waves in Mexico and California and climbed the Face of El Capitan Half Dome prior to his injury that left him a paraplegic. He is now being sponsored by Billabong to climb Half Dome again, a task tough enough without being paralyzed from the waist down. Click here to read an article about Randy from INERTIA.
We've got a great day lined up and I hope to 'sea' you on Saturday, April 26th!

Sincerely,

Lorraine Schmalenberger, President, La Jolla Shores Surfing Association: lorraine@ljssa.org
