Local Charities Named Beneficiaries of 2014 Contest
Besides hosting the best kid's surf contest ever...we're also committed to raising funds for charity with the net proceeds from our annual april event.  This year our surf club members have designated four charities to receive funding - all great causes that relate to our kids, the ocean, and our local environment.  We're proud to announce our 2014 Contest beneficiaries:

Natural High -a Natural High Logo (San Diego based) drug abuse prevention organization that helps empower youth to discover and pursue what they truly love to do, so they say no to an artificial high.

Scripps Oceanography Logo Scripps Institute of Oceanography  in support of important climate research.  This year, we support the efforts of Scripps Institution of Oceanography to maintain the iconic 'Keeling curve', a 55-year record of rising atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. We support the ongoing efforts of Scripps scientists to conduct research at sites around the world to collect and publish this important data.

San Diego Wounded Warrior Project in support of surfing programs the meet the needs of injured service members of the local chapter. Our surf club is proud to support this charity for the first time, inspired by the work of Torrey Pines Christian Church whose members volunteer by teaching surfing in the (local) Naval Hospital Surf Clinic.

San Diego Junior Lifeguard Foundation supports the summer Junior Lifeguard program of the City of San Diego.  Many of our kids have benefited from this valuable program that teaches ocean awareness and important lifesaving skills and knowledge that have helped a new generation be safe in the ocean.  Our funding helps support scholarships for kids who can't afford the fees.

We thank all of you for your support in helping us give back to the community!

Surf Art Contest Announces Grand Prize Winner!
Annual Art Show at La Jolla Riford Library in April

Every year, our surf club sponsors an Art Contest for youth ages 18 & under. The grand prize winner receives $100 and will have their artwork adorn our 2014 Menehune Contest event t-shirts. The top 40 entries will be exhibited at the La Jolla Riford Library during April.

We are pleased to announce our Grand Prize Winner, Maddie Troyan, of Parkway Middle School in La Mesa.   Her artwork best illustrated our contest: kids surfing the Shores and having fun!  We'll show off her winning original artwork in our next e-news when we have it scanned. Pictured at left is our 2nd place winner, Kyle Strothers, of Steele Canyon High School. We loved the good vibe from this scene-kids sitting on a bench at La Jolla Shores, watching the sunset...perfect!  Please contact Art Contest Coordinator Alex Furuholmen for more information about the Contest.  Thanks to everyone who participated!

La Jolla Shores surf club will attend the Rincon Invitational
The Groundswell Society is pleased to announce that the 7th Rincon Invitational will be held the weekend of March 22, 23 2014.

Over the years the Invitational has earned a unique reputation for giving teams of surfers with outstanding public service records the opportunity to surf some of California's best waves for an hour to themselves... We're making the road trip to this special break to share in the aloha spirit with the other clubs and groups gathered there. We'll be camping at Carpenteria State Beach in a large group campsite Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening.  If you would like to join us, please contact Surf Club President Lorraine Schmalenberger asap: 858.692.5235.
Surfers needed for health & fitness study
Swim Ergometer to test upper body strength, endurance, and
aerobic capacity.
Have you ever wondered if you are more fit than your peers because you surf? Here's an opportunity to answer that question.  A study is underway at Cal State San Marcos to research the benefits that surfing has on our cardiovascular health and fitness.  Research subjects are needed and you are invited to participate for free. A few sessions will be scheduled - one in the exercise physiology lab to measure upper and lower body strength and balance. The other test is at the beach, where you will be filmed in a surf session with a heart rate monitor on.  IF all this sounds interesting, please contact Kinesiology-Health Sciences student (and surfer) Daniel Pitt: pitt001@cougars.csusm.edu or call (619) 890-2724.

We're  looking for historical surf photos at La Jolla Shores!

Our surf club has been given the opportunity to contribute and install a design on the (soon to be) new north restroom wall at La Jolla Shores beach in North Kellogg Park.  We will be promoting a surfer's "code of conduct" with graphical signs depicting commonly known surf etiquette for the thousands of visitors to our beach.  We are also interested in illustrating our surfing heritage through the inclusion of some older surfing photos from the 1970s and prior.  Pictured at left, is an iconic photo of Shores local Dickie Moon, sent to me by Tom Keck, circa 1964.  If you know anyone, or have some old photos in your own archives of surfers/surfing at the Shores, please contact Surf Club President Lorraine Schmalenberger 858.692.5235.  We plan to donate our collected photos back to the La Jolla Historical Society for safekeeping!  Click on the photo below of beach revelers circa 1903 when our beach was called "Long Beach" to view a wonderful collection of historical beach photos from early last century.  Thanks to Archivist/Curator Michael Mishler
of the La Jolla Historical Society for his help.
