Jan 4-5 Doheny Longboard Surfing Association Gathering of the Tribes at Church Point/San Onofre. We're sending a full team roster. Come cheer us on!

March 22-23: Ground Swell Society presents the Rincon Invitational - a unique event that gives teams of surfers with outstanding public service records the opportunity to surf some of California's best waves for an hour to themselves. La Jolla Shores Surfing Association (LJSSA) plans to send in a bid. Stay tuned.

Congratulations to our surf team members who placed in the finals of the busy fall Coalition season: Simon Andrews, Sarah Goldstein, Carla and Ava Verbrugghen, Hannah and Matt Dunfee, Kristin Furuholmen, and Lorraine Schmalenberger.

Greetings and Happy New Year! Thanks to all of you who turned out for our Annual Holiday Party and Toy Drive in December. We had a blast and collected lots of toys for the Salvation Army Toys 4 Tots.

Everyone is invited to my favorite surf club event next week: Our Annual New Years Day Potluck. Bring a friend, bring a dish, and come meet your fellow surfers for what I call an "out of water" experience. We so often take each other for granted and it's nice to socialize when we're not competing for waves!

We're proud to sponsor a surf team and we've been busy this past fall attending contests sponsored by our good friends in other surf clubs of the Coalition. Congratulations to Simon Andrews who won our MVP honors for his top finishes in the Extreme Legends Division. We welcome you all to get involved.

On January 6, 2014, Friends of La Jolla Shores invites you to the ground breaking of the next reconstruction project at the beach: our north bathrooms - ready for an upgrade!

SAVE the Date - Saturday, April 26, 2014 will be our 14th Annual Menehune Surf Contest. We're excited to announce our 2014 Charity recipients.

As the sun sets on 2013, and the northwest swell season revs up, I am thankful for our beautiful beach and a community of surfers and friends to share it with. Enjoy, and SEA you out surfin'!

New Years Day Potluck Jan 1, 2014 - You're All Invited!

It's an annual tradition with our surf club, and everyone is included: WED., January 1, 2014 @ 9AM on the boardwalk in front of Dave's truck (just north of Tower 32). Bring a dish to share and enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow surfers. We gather on the beach @ 10 AM for our annual photo (above), featured on our website and facebook page. Breaking Ground on North Bathrooms Reconstruction January 6, 2014

All invited to attend!

Join community members for the groundbreaking of the soon to be new North Comfort Station (bathrooms) at La Jolla Shores beach. The North Comfort Station will be similar in design and function to the existing South Comfort Station with the addition of four (4) dressing/shower rooms. Our surf club has been invited to submit a design for an educational wall to feature a surfer's code of conduct sign. Many beaches now feature such signs at various breaks around the world. We're excited to have a chance to contribute to the new structure in a way that recognizes the importance of surfing at our beach. Mark your calendars for our 14th Annual Menehune Surf Contest for youth ages 18 & under in longboard, shortboard, and novice divisions. If you can contribute to the event with your time, talent, or resources, please contact Contest Director Stephanie Hoffman to help; Stephanie@ljssa.org. Our 2014 beneficiaries have been selected by club members and include some worthy causes and projects which we're proud to support with the net proceeds from our event: Natural High, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, Junior Lifeguard Foundation, and the Wounded Warrior Project in partnership with Torrey Pines Chuch.

Surf Club to start online collection

La Jolla Shores has a rich surfing heritage dating back decades, but the images that remain are hidden in old scrapbooks, and archives of those who graced the Shores before out time. We'd like to dig up that past and celebrate those who made surfing history here. Tom Keck, surf photographer, kindly sent us this iconic shot of Shores local Dicky Moon, circa 1964. We plan to post our collection online and a few of you have heeded the call. Send us your photos - and please identify the surfers and the photographer so we may give credit. We welcome new members Layla Mae Dunfee and Silas Vincent Connelly this fall into our surfing family. Layla Mae Dunfee was born on September 9, 2013 to parents Roseann and Matt, weighing in at 7lbs 3 ounces. Reports dad Matt, she already loves the water (bath time) and is sure to join big sister Hannah on the LJSSA surf team! Silas Vincent Connelly was born to parents Michelle and Kevin on October 23, 2013, weighing in at 8lbs, 10 oz. He joins big sisters McKenna and Kella, and is sure to be a great addition to our surf team some day!
