Summer is Bountiful
Happy 4th of July!

Greetings!

It's been a busy spring for all of us, and I never had a chance to properly welcome summer until today.  Not only did i get sunburned, but I also lost a game of jellyfish dodgeball while enjoying body surfing and my first season ocean swim. Ouch!

Lorraine@TempleMountJerusalem I consider myself lucky that our surf club connections paved the way for my first surf trip ever....to Ashdod, Israel, leading a surf delegation of our friends from the Coalition of Surf Clubs.  I am smiling with the memories and the incredible journey of surfers coming together to share their cultures and surf stoke. Check out our story written by Simon and Julie Andrews and the photo galleries we have from our good times night surfing and touring this amazing country.

I am very much saddened by the recent loss of a dear family member and today, I met another kindred surf soul on the boardwalk, also grieving. Brian had lost his beloved wife Gloria Brown to breast cancer, and as we consoled each other, noting the very full and happy lives of the departed, we both agreed that the lessons of grief teach us to celebrate life by living better. I am comforted by the words of my departed sister in law Lisa Froeb who wrote this prayer while on a  trip last year to Ecuador: "...Please help me live every day through the lens of abundance rather than that of scarcity and may I end the day with more things done than left undone..."   Amen, sister - those words ring so true for me as I look out over the seascape of abundance everywhere at La Jolla Shores: our community, our waves, our beach, our families and our friends.  May we live well while we still can.  Warm water, sunny days, lots of waves, happy beach goers....and yes, abundant surfers....I love you all.

I'm very happy to report our most successful (13th Annual)  La Jolla Shores Surfing Menehune Contest ever in April.  Check out the photo galleries, event program, and charities that were beneficiaries of our event - and THANK YOU to all who participated, volunteered, donated, and supported our big day.

IF you can't find a parking spot on July 4th to enjoy a surf, then please consider joining us the DAY AFTER - Friday July 5th when our surf club cleans up the beach.  The Park & Rec. beach crews have come to depend on us to help restore the beach, parking areas, and lawn back to normal.  We'll be hard at work from 7am to 9am, come join us!

Enjoy the beach, share the waves, and SEA you out surfin'!

8th Annual Abram Jones Memorial Blood Drive

Every so often we have an opportunity to give a part of ourselves, and there's nothing like donating your own blood  - literally, the gift of life to someone, somewhere.  Abram Jones was a young friend of one of our surfers, and every year, i'm proud to promote this blood drive on our back door step - the San Diego blood mobile will be at the Shores parking lot on THURS. July 11.  Call to schedule an appointment 1-800-4MY-SDBB or log onto www.sandiegobloodbank.org.  Walk-ins accepted.

SteamerLaneStCruz La Jolla Shores Surf Team members enjoy Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz and Tourmaline at the Summer Longboard Classic!

Our surf club members have been spread around the globe recently.  In May, the Furuholmen family traveled to represent La Jolla Shores Surfing Association at the Annual Santa Cruz Longboard Union Memorial Day Invitational at Steamer Lane.  Dad Eric competed in both the longboard and shortboard divisions and daughter Kristin competed in the Menehune Division.  They reported "wonderful new friends...well organized contest...and of course, the "amazing beauty of Santa Cruz - with lots of sea life: starfish, otters, seals, crabs, dolphins"..all from their seaside camping at Steamer Lane! We hope that some of you reading this will travel next year to this Classic Coalition event hosted by our No. Cal. friends!
