Gathering of the Crew for a Good Cause.... Local Charities Named Beneficiaries of 2013 Menehune Contest
Besides hosting the best kid's surf contest ever...we're also committed to raising funds for charity with the net proceeds from our annual april event. This year our members have nominated and voted on four charities to receive funding - all great causes that relate to our kids, the ocean, and our local environment. We're proud to announce our 2013 Contest beneficiaries:
Natural High -a (San Diego based) drug abuse prevention organization that helps youth discover, amplify and pursue their natural high so that they have a reason to say no to an artificial high. Scripps Institute of Oceanography in support of the Oceanographic Collections. The collections are world-renowned resources supporting basic research, educating current and future generations of scientists, providing factual information to governmental agencies and public policy makers, stimulating curiosity and scientific understanding, and providing a repository for samples collected by Scripps researchers.
Torrey Pines State Natural Preserve is located within San Diego city limits and yet remains one of the wildest stretches of land on our Southern California coast! Torrey Pines Docent Society (TPDS) provides opportunities for community organizations like ours to support programs and projects within the Torrey Pines State Reserve. Donations go specifically for trail maintenance, habitat maintenance, education, or library program funds. WiLDCOAST is an international conservation team that conserves coastal and marine ecosystems and wildlife. WiLDCOAST protects some of the most beautiful and biologically significant coastal areas in the Californias and Latin America.

La Jolla Shores surf team places 8th overall in 2012 Coalition standings
The Coalition of Surfing Clubs recently published the standings for 2012. We compete with and against 30+ surfing clubs up and down the west coast. Our surf team has been showing up at the big events, and slowly but surely working out way into and up the ranks of the top ten surf clubs. All our individual and team finishes at every Coalition event make a huge difference - and I thank all of you who have competed, camped, cooked, and been a part of our surfing family. We've had a lot of fun along the way and everyone is invited in. Special shout out goes to Kevin Connelly, our top MVP. He had four 1st place finishes in the Men's division last year! Kudos also to Mike Dixon for all the great video footage, and to our surfing juniors - Ava and Annika Verbrugghen, Cameron Lapuaho, Carsten Lester, and Kristin Furuholmen for making every trip worthwhile! Pictured at right is future team surfer Kella Connelly helping team rider Carla Verbrugghen at the Tourmaline Classic in November. Contact surf team captain Michelle Connelly to get involved.

Welcome Mickayla Rina Paraiso!
It seems that the ocean waters off La Jolla Shores continue to be proven and fertile ground for producing great surfing offspring! We extend an official warm welcome to Mickayla Rina Paraiso, born September 12, 2012 to proud parents Nikki and Ben Paraiso and big brother Quinan. Weighing in at 7lb 5oz and already making beach appearances with her mom, I have a feeling she'll soon be appearing in the not too distant future in our Menehune Contest! She'll be in good company with all the girls that precede her from our local surf community and friends: Olivia, Kella, Ellianna, Bailey, Sisilia, and McKenna.

Surfing Etiquette never goes out of style
When I opened a newsletter from my niece's 3rd grade classroom in Tiburon CA., I was surprised and delighted to discover their teacher had adorned their classroom wall with this photo of a tiled wall in Capitola/Santa Cruz area exhibiting the very basics of surf etiquette. Their teacher, Christine Heilmann of the Bel Aire School, a surfer herself - noted that the surf rules apply to ALL areas of life and it got me thinking...We could all use a refresher course in surf etiquette however experienced we may be. La Jolla Shores attracts so many surfers of such different backgrounds and skill levels; it seems like the time could be ripe to entertain our OWN surfing wall. We have just such an opportunity.
The north bathrooms will be remodeled after this summer - a much needed upgrade. Our surf club is hopeful we can design and install a surfing sign that will appeal to and speak to EVERYONE who enjoys our beach and surfs there. If you have ideas and would like to get involved in this project, please contact me. IN the mean time, let's remind ourselves of those basic surfing rules. Meanwhile stay safe, keep warm, and I hope to SEA you soon in the lineup!
