Upcoming coalition event Sat/Sun Jan 5 & 6 @ Church's.
The coalition season kicks off next weekend at Church's, just north of San Onofre, sponsored by the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association.
Our surf team competes at each event and team members' results including our team paddle race, are tabulated for overall team finishes at each event and cumulatively for the competition year. The overall team standings are not tabulated for 2012, but will soon be posted on the Coalition website: surfclubs.org.
Please contact surf team captain Michelle Connelly for more information about competing for La Jolla Shores.

Greetings!
As the sun sets on 2012, i'm reflective of all the great times we've enjoyed this past year - potluck picnics, surf contests, camping, parties, scripps pier tour, charity outreach - and yes, SURFING and the ocean, connecting us all to one another.
December brings the northwest swell back to our shores, and some killer sunsets too - thanks to Ron Greene for sharing this one with us. I hope you've had time during the holidays to get down to the beach with your loved ones and enjoy the natural beauty that is our beloved home break - La Jolla Shores.

Tuesday, January 1, 2013 - New Year's Day
Annual Potluck on the Boardwalk - 9am to 11am
You're all invited to our annual outing on New Year's Day at La Jolla Shores beach - bring a potluck dish to share, and come join us on the boardwalk in front of Dave's truck, our hang out spot. (just a few benches south of the north restrooms.) We'll have tables set out, coffee, and picnic utensils - family members and friends are all welcome! We gather as a club with our surfboards for our annual group photo at 10 am - so don't miss it. Just show up - no need to RSVP.
Hope to sea you next year at the Shores!

We welcomed a capacity crowd at our Annual Holiday Party at the VFW Hall in PB on December 16. Over 60 guests showed up to share in the Holiday spirit of our community of friends and family. Many thanks to club member Mike Dixon for showing his awesome (local surf) video footage taped over the past few years set to music, and to party director and social planner extraordinaire Phil Bimer for organizing all the food and guests! Thanks also to our own Dr. Phil Rumsey and Stephanie Hoffman for providing awesome door prizes; and to Santa's little helpers Kella Connelly and Kalene Larson for helping distribute those door prizes to all the winners. Thank you Pete Zacharzuk for hauling off our bounty of donated toys for the Salvation Army Toys for Tots program. A special shout out goes to our recognized honorees for the evening: LJSSA surf team rider MVP of 2012 Kevin Connelly (four 1st place finishes in 2012!), and to Dr. Howard Doty, our "oldest" and most enduring Shores surfer who noted the secret to a long healthy life: "Keep Moving!"

 NIGHT SURFING IN ASHDOD ISRAEL ANYONE?
It's not often we get contacted by the Mayor of a foreign city, but recently, our surf club did. Dr. Yecheile Lasry, Mayor of Ashdod Israel, a popular surfing destination on the Mediterranean coastline of Israel, contacted our surfing association to mutually explore ways we can build a constructive relationship to "establish a joint platform of international cooperation in the area of surfing and marine sports." WOW! That sounds so cool! To read the letter, click here. I'm not sure what we could teach their nascent surfing association - whose accomplishments would make any of us green with envy - including a membership of over 3,000 surfers!! Through some preliminary communication, the Mayor has invited us to partake in their Mediterranean festival in May, 2013, including: - accommodations at one of Ashdod's new hotels;
- complimentary meals including an Israeli style BBQ at the Surf Club's president's home, and an Ashdod Culinary Restaurant Tour;
- Mini-bus and a guide to Jerusalem, a Mediterranean Sea Cruise, and a visit to the Dead Sea;
- VIP treatment at the local Mediterranean festival;
- Night surfing followed by a midnight beach party, Israel style.
IF you are interested in being included on such a wonderful trip as an ambassador of Southern California surfing, please contact our Israel surf club liaison, Allan Goldstein. Allan will communicate tour dates and other details if we get enough interest for a tour group. We will be hosting their Surf Club President Omer here in late March or April, so we'll have the opportunity to extend our Shore's welcome then. |

Surfers at the Shores recovered the offshore Scripps station weather buoy recently after the last storm. Over the years, our beach spits up a lot of interesting things - squid, jellyfish, lobster traps, you name it. Within 1/2 hour of phoning the 858 telephone # on the buoy, a young scientist (pictured at left) came to recover it and noted our tax dollars were hard at work collecting weather data beamed by satellite from the buoy to scientists studying and tracking the data - water temps, wave heights, swell direction, etc. For more information, visit the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) website.
