According to Jim Loop, Gateway's President/ CEO, "The honor is well deserved.  Sandy has done so much for Gateway and for the community.  We feel very fortunate to have her time and expertise as she leads our Board of Directors."

From everyone at Gateway, "Congratulations Sandy...and thank you!"

Greetings!

Yikes!  First it was rain...then snow...but what is that I see?  I believe it's the sun, returning to brighten the sky and my mood!  I hope it brightens your day as well, and I hope you enjoy the latest edition of Gateway's e-newsletter.

Gateway Christmas Angels Support 299 Children
in 2012
Thanks to 44 Christmas Angels (groups, individuals, and families), Gateway was able to provide Christmas gifts to 299 children and teens from five Gateway programs and the Alliance.

We get a lot of great thank you notes from younger children and teenage girls, but the teenage boys seem to find it more difficult to express their excitement about and gratitude for the gifts they receive.  I'm guessing that such things aren't considered cool.  That's why Omar's thank you note, on its way to Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, appealed to me and why I am sharing it with you.  Enjoy!

Gateway Financial Freedom Receives Funding for
Community Services

Gateway Financial Freedom (GFF), formerly Consumer Credit Counseling Service, has received grants from two local organizations to offer services to the community.

The Women's Fund Check Presentation
The Women's Fund (TWF) awarded a grant to GFF, to provide individual financial coaching/ counseling for women referred by other local organizations, also working with TWF.  They see debt as a barrier to women stepping up and moving forward financially, and they've asked GFF to help women receiving services get debt free.  Above:  The Women's Fund Board Chair, Linda Friedman, presents the grant award check to Doug Horst, Director of Gateway Financial Freedom.

Funds received through a grant from PNC Financial Services Group will be utilized to provide financial education programming to community organizations such as the YWCA, St. Anne's Home, and Gateway's own Independent Living Program.  Potential topics include:
  • Budgeting 101:  Tell your money what you want it to do!
  • Banking, Saving and Borrowing Wisely
  • Your Credit Counts!
    • Feed the Pig--Kids Can Save Too!

Since all of its programming is free or low cost, Gateway Financial Freedom relies heavily on the support of United Way and grantors such as The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, Regions Bank, Independent Presbyterian Church, The Women's Fund and PNC Financial Services Group.  We extend our thanks to all of them.
