You have received this e-newsletter from the California Coastal Coalition (CalCoast), a non-profit advocacy group comprised of 35 coastal cities; five counties; SANDAG, BEACON and SCAG; private sector partners and NGO's, committed to protecting and restoring California's coastline through beach sand restoration, increasing the flow of natural sediment, wetlands recovery, improved water quality, watershed management and the reduction of marine debris and plastic pollution. When possible, we try to post articles that are not protected by pay walls.

Coastal Commission Accepting Applications for WHALE TAIL� Grants

 

The WHALE TAIL� Grants Program distributes funds from sales of the WHALE TAIL� License Plate. The grants support programs that teach California's children and the general public to value and take action to improve the health of the state's marine and coastal resources. Adopt-A-Beach� programs, as well as other beach maintenance and coastal habitat restoration projects that have an educational component, are also eligible for these grants. This grant program focuses on reaching communities that are currently poorly served in terms of marine and coastal education. Applications must be postmarked by November 1, 2014. CLVC and LCV Announce "Price We All Pay" Campaign
   
At a press conference Monday, the California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) and the national League of Conservation Voters (LCV) announced a new campaign, The Price We All Pay
, to curb the influence of polluter money in elections. As part of the campaign, the groups are urging California members of Congress to co-sponsor the Government by the People Act, and are raising awareness of the impacts of polluter money in politics at a time of record climate change impacts nationwide.

EPA Announces Funding to Create Two New Drinking Water Innovation Centers

 

Tuesday the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) continues its commitment to improving America's drinking water by providing over $8 million to create two national centers for research and innovation in small to medium sized drinking water systems.The recipients are the University of Colorado Boulder's Design of Risk Reducing, Innovative Implementable Small System Knowledge (DeRISK) Center, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst's Water Innovation Network for Sustainable Small Systems (WINSSS) Center. More information about the grant recipients and centers is available here. Plastic Planet - New Research and Solutions for the Ocean Trash Problem

California Regional Water Quality Control Board, San Diego Region: Notice of Public Workshop

You are invited to submit abstracts to the session on Coastal Engineering of upcoming ISOPE 2015Conference in Hawaii, USA, from June 21 - 26 in 2015. Abstracts are welcome on coastal hydrodynamics, coastal structures, coastal erosion, sediment transport and ecosystem, coastal risk and future development, tsunami and safety and other related coastal engineering topics. Department Chair, Civil and Environmental Engineering

Applications and nominations are being sought for the position of Chair, Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia. The department seeks a chair who will be able to build upon recent investments in coastal, sustainable energy, and transportation engineering and continue to lead the expansion of research opportunities and scholarly achievements in all areas of the department.  The successful candidate will have a distinguished record of scholarly publications, an internationally recognized research program, evidence of effective leadership in an academic setting, and actively engaged in professional societies. Candidates are expected to merit appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure.  

Tsunami Storm Surge Scientist


AIR Worldwide (AIR), a member of the Verisk Insurance Solutions group at Verisk Analytics is seeking a Tsunami Storm Surge Scientist to research and develop models used to estimate and manage the financial risk associated with catastrophes resulting from extreme weather events.
