Photo of the Day
Not long ago, these girls thought they would never go to school beyond elementary grades. They come from very poor families who live in a remote location. School in their home community only goes through 6th grade and their families are too poor to send them to the city to continue their education. A pastor had a vision for helping children in this community get an education and break out of the poverty. They would become leaders in the vision to transform the nation. FCM began to sponsor children from this remote mountain community. The girls in this photo are among the first ones. After high school, they qualified and entered one of the best universities in the Philippines. The pastor said they would be assured of good jobs because of going to this university.
It was not always easy for them. They had lived in a rural setting all their lives and moving to the city was a big adjustment. At times they felt inferior. They had to catch up on things they were not taught in the mountain school, such as how to use a computer. One of our ministry partners (who is also a sponsor of 4 children) purchased computers with printers and software needed so these girls and others in the community could learn to use them. One computer went with the students to college and another was left on the mountain to teach the younger ones. Through all the challenges, they refused to give up (often because of the encouragement from their pastor and the knowledge that their sponsors were giving them a great opportunity for a better life).
Two of the girls have finished college now and are in "on the job" training. Can you tell we are proud of them?
This year, with the help of Sponsors, Partners and Friends, FCM sponsors 50 children and young people in this community, 12 of whom are in college. It has transformed the community. Even elementary school children now talk of going to college some day because they have seen their older siblings and friends go. It was not even a dream just a short time ago. Now it is something they strive to attain. They work hard to keep their grades up so they can qualify for scholarships and dream big dreams. This transformation is something you -- Sponsors, Partners and Friends -- have made possible.
You too can help change a life. It only takes $1 per day per child.
