PTSA Candidate Forum This Tuesday Gives Insight Into State Legislative Races

Tired of the barrage of political ads and robo-calls with lots of mudslinging but precious little concrete information? Get the specifics on where they stand straight from the candidates TOMORROW NIGHT, Oct. 21st, at the PTSA/PTA-sponsored candidate forum on education from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at Palmetto Middle School. Our next Florida Legislature wields the power to shape education funding and hot button issues such as accountability, new assessments, and school safety - perhaps more than who sits in the governor's chair.

The event focuses on the races in House Districts 112, 114, and 115 (Coral Gables, Cutler Bay, Key Biscayne, Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest, South Miami, parts of West Miami and the city of Miami). Two of the incumbents - Rep. Erik Fresen and Rep. Michael Bileca - have served during the last two sessions as powerful committee chairmen determining education funding and molding education policy. As such, they have impacted every single school-age in Miami-Dade County. You can find Fresen's voting record and Bileca's voting record on our PTSA website.

The candidates will be on the hot seat for two hours. Your attendance will go a long way to convince candidates we care how they vote on public education. Empty chairs send the opposite message. The forum will be moderated by Barry University political science associate professor Sean Forman, Ph.D., and our own PTSA President Anna Hochkammer will serve as timekeeper.

Volunteers: New sign in procedure.

The way it stands now, when you enter the school doors you sign in with Pete as a visitor. Now, he will also ask you to sign in the "Volunteer Sign In Log". It will be a separate folder on Pete's desk just inside the main doors.

This is merely a reminder that this is occurring. Pete or the person signing in volunteers will direct as needed.

College Fair:

Palmetto and the MPSH PTSA will be hosting over 100 college and university reps at our annual College Fair in the gym at 7:00pm. Everyone is invited and admission is free. This is yet another service paid for by your PTSA dues. If you haven't joined yet, and you plan to attend the College Fair, why not take a moment to formally join the PTSA at www.palmettohighptsa.org
