Upcoming Events:

  • March 24 - Spring Break begins
  • March 31 - Classes resume

Legislation:

The coming week promises to be eventful:

1)   Board of Education will be meeting on Tuesday, and Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart may announce the name of the assessment that will replace FCAT

2)      Florida PTA is holding its Legislative Conference in Tallahassee at the same time that several voucher bills that it opposes will be heard in House and Senate Committees

3)      Library Task Force will hold its final meeting on Wednesday and will sign off -or not- on the Final Report prepared by the Mayor's staff.

Just to review what is on our webpage (palmettohighptsa.org) under Legislation:

1)      A full list of PROPOSED BILLS that have to do with children's education, safety, and welfare

2)      A list of BILLS ON THE FAST TRACK that shows those bills with the best chance of passing

3)      A listing of HOUSE AND SENATE CALENDARS and EDUCATION COMMITTEE MEETINGS for the next few weeks

4)      KNOW YOUR LEGISLATORS with contact information for those representing the Palmetto Feeder Pattern

5)      Miami Dade County Council of PTAs/PTSAs LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES

Now is the time to contact your legislators regarding what you like - or what you don't like. Some bills are moving very fast this year, and will land on the Governor's desk within two or three weeks, if not sooner. Plus, if you include the name of Miami Palmetto PTSA in the body of your email, and cc it to advocacy2014@pta305.org by April 1 (no fooling!), you can help to win a French crepe party for Palmetto!

Please contact restaurants and businesses you know of, who might be interested. Cost for a restaurant to participate is $350 (They keep the profits on everything they sell), and for another type of business to have a booth is $600 ($425 + $175 for membership in Pinecrest business association). There are other opportunities, such as sponsoring a banner. Please contact Alexandra Flinn alixwrites@aol.com for further information and forms to present to businesses. Also, plan to attend the event on April 6. This is a major fundraiser for Palmetto!
