Service Hours Submittal Deadline May 15th
All service hours are due this Wednesday, May 15. To submit their hours, students are asked to complete an external hours form (available to them on the service Haiku page and on the 4th floor message board). Students can then return completed hours to the message board, and will receive an email when those hours are logged. Students can also log into UGIVE.org using their Padua email to see the hours that are currently logged.
Funnel Cake Volunteer Meeting This Wednesday A meeting for all funnel cake volunteers will be held this Wednesday, May 15, at 6:30pm. Come and learn about how easy and FUN it is to volunteer! Unable to attend the meeting, but interested in learning more? Contact Rainbow Shaw-Giaquinto, rshaw@paduaacademy.org.
AP Exams
There is an important change in how students will get their AP scores. This July, AP scores will only be available online. Students will no longer receive scores in the mail. To get scores, students must sign up for a free College Board account by going to apscore.org. We encourage students to take this step now and sign up for their account so they will be ready to access their scores. For more information, go to apscore.org
Live Streaming of Closing Liturgy and Graduation
Once again this year, we will offer a Live Stream of our graduation, including guest seating during the ceremony in the Padua café. In years past this has worked out very well, especially for those who might have trouble seeing or hearing. They can have a "birds-eye" view of the ceremony in the comfort of our café.Graduation will take place on May 30.
This year we are adding Live Streaming of our Closing Liturgy on May 17 so that parents can be a part of this Mass. Due to our large student body, we are unable to seat parents in our café during the liturgy. This Mass and program are for all of our students as a "Moving Up" ceremony. At the end of Mass, the student body will "move up" to their next year's position. The closing liturgy will also be a very special Mass for Lindsay Wigo '16, who will celebrate her First Communion and Confirmation that day. As a sisterhood, we look forward to welcoming Lindsay into our Church.
Click here to access the link for the live stream of closing liturgy. Closing Liturgy will begin at 9:10 on May 17. You may need to refresh your browser if you don't see the Liturgy by 9:15. This link will also be used for Graduation on May 30. If you have trouble accessing the live stream through the above link, copy and paste the following into your address bar: http://www.useducationtv.com/Default.aspx?sid=20997

Funnel Cake Volunteers Needed
St. Anthony's Italian Festival will be here soon. This year the festival runs Sunday, June 9th - Sunday, June 16th. Padua Academy will continue the tradition of operating the Funnel Cake Booth. Last year the school profited approximately $10,000. A large percentage is designated to advance technology at the school, while a smaller portion is donated to the Senior After-Prom Committee. We need batter help, fryers, sugar assistants, cashiers, and a clean-up crew. If you are interested in being a Captain (which requires a 5 to 6-hour time commitment), please personally contact the coordinator, Mrs. Rainbow Shaw-Giaquinto. Use this site - www.signupgenius.com - to sign-up for 2-3 hour commitments. Click on Find A Sign Up and enter rshaw@paduaacademy.org, then follow the prompts. Don't forget to include cell phone number. All volunteers will receive a free t-shirt and free admission to the festival on the day they volunteer. Incoming freshmen and current Padua students are encouraged to volunteer but they MUST sign up with Mrs. G. in the PE OFFICE or via email. This will count toward their service hours. Please contact Mrs. Rainbow Shaw-Giaquinto with questions or concerns at: rshaw@paduaacademy.org. A meeting for ALL volunteers will be held on May 15 at 6:30 PM in the Padua cafe.
Men of Padua: Your Help Is Needed
The Men of Padua organization is again in need of Padua dads to help "man" the funnel cake booth during this year's St. Anthony's Italian Festival. The "Padua Dads' Night" is Friday, June 14th. There are three shifts available: 5-7pm, 7-9pm, and 9-11pm. Ten dads are needed during each shift, and no prior experience is necessary. If you can help out, please e-mail Mr. Cross at MOP@paduaacademy, and let him know which shift you'd prefer. (Yes, you may certainly stay for multiple shifts!) There will be a meeting for all funnel cake volunteers on May 15th at 6:30 in the Padua cafe.

Summer Spirit Wear Is Available for a Limited Time for Current and Incoming Students
|
|
We have assembled a selection of brand new tee shirts, tank tops, shorts, summer weight sweat pants and sweat shirts. We also have several styles of very popular "Padua Mom" and "Padua Dad" polo shirts and tee shirts! All of these items will be available for a short time only through pre-paid ordering. Order forms with pictures of clothing ARE available online. Because each student is able to pre-order exactly what she wants, there is no worry about popular items selling out, or running out of sizes! The deadline for orders is 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15. We are very sorry, but late orders cannot be accepted.
Two Convenient Ways to Order:
- Online: Students can pick up order forms at school or online at paduaacademy.org/spiritwear. Please review the forms, decide on purchases, and complete the forms carefully. Samples will be available at school during flex and lunch beginning Monday, May 13. Students can decide on sizes by trying on samples. Current students can return their order form at school. Please send a check made payable to Padua Academy. If the parent is comfortable sending a credit card to school, payment will be taken with a credit card during lunch or flex. We prefer that students do not bring large amounts of cash to school.
- In Person: Come after school on Monday, May 13 and Tuesday, May 14 to place orders! We will be taking orders from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. both days! Current students and incoming freshmen are welcome to stop by with parents on these two days to look at merchandise and place an order. The samples will be available in the Café. Cash, checks, and all major credit cards will be accepted. Incoming freshmen have been invited to attend this event! This is a great opportunity for current students to give our newest "sisters" a friendly Padua welcome! In addition, sale items from the Padua Prep Bookstore will also be available.

Senior Class Visits Washington, D.C.
On Friday, May 10, the senior class took a field trip to Washington, D.C. Each year the English and Social Studies departments sponsor this trip, the purpose of which is to provide the students with an "out of classroom" educational experience, one that enhances their learning off site. As enrichment to their study of the the Vietnam Conflict and the novel, The Things They Carried, by TimO'Brien students visit the Vietnam War memorial. Seniors study the history and construction of the wall and in class each student is given the name of a Vietnam Veteran. After researching her soldier, each student is encouraged to locate that soldiers name on the wall. To further enhance their experience, after visiting the wall, seniors proceed to the Smithsonian Mall where they may visit any of the buildings rich in American History. Students are free to view the many cultural exhibits which are free and open to the public. Two of the most popular exhibits are the First Lady Exhibit, which includes the Inaugural Gowns and the gem exhibit in the Museum of Natural History which holds the Hope Diamond.
Sophomores Enjoy Breakfast Together
On Friday, May 10, sophomore class officers Emily Thiemann, Erin Spadaccini, Pearce Quesenberry, and Taylor Hazewski hosted a sophomore brunch to celebrate a wonderful sophomore year. Each year the American Heart Association sponsors an annual walking day, where employees are encouraged to wear sneakers to work and take at least 30 minutes out of their day to get up and walk. It's a great way to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and to give your co-workers a friendly push toward a healthier life. On Friday, May 10, Rainbow Shaw-Giaquinto's Health class joined employees from St. Francis Hospital to celebrate this initiative. Led by Cathy Weaver, Vice President of Ministry and Mission at St. Francis, students and hospital employees joined together for the one-mile walk, beginning at Padua and ending at St. Francis. All participants were given pedometers to encourage them to take 10,000 steps per day. We look forward to next year and hope to increase the number of participants!!!

Catholic Business Network of Greater Philadelphia
"The Remarkable John Paul II"
Presented by
Sister J. Sheila Galligan from Immaculata University
Friday, May 17
7:30 a.m. Registration/Networking
8:15 a.m. Program/Presentation
Edgemont Country Club (Newtown Square, PA)
| |
This presentation will focus on the remarkable life and legacy of Blessed John Paul II. The content will include perspectives on John Paul II's personal witness, theological thinking and the prophetic humanism which continue to compel our attention and admiration.
Sister J. Sheila Galligan, IHM, has been a professor in the Department of Theology at Immaculata University since 1990. She teaches many of the elective/special topics courses. She has delved deeply into the lives and literary legacies of C.S. Lewis and John Paul II. Sister Sheila is actively engaged in promoting respect for human life. She believes the study of theology affords students opportunities to engage in faithful, critical and spiritual reflection upon the rich Catholic intellectual tradition as well as upon the way in which that tradition has concretely engaged in explicit and/or implicit conversation with the broader culture throughout history. Through theology's harmonious union of faith and reason, human knowledge and experience come to be informed by true wisdom.
