CLASS REPS

Thanks to everyone who volunteered to be a class rep this year! A complete list of class reps and their emails can be found on our Council website here.

NUT FREE SCHOOL!

Due to the large number of  students that have nut allergies, Castor Valley continues to be a nut free school. We ask families not to include nut items in snacks - this is for the safety of our anaphylactic children. Should you be unsure as to the contents of a food item, please do not send it. If you'd like more information on the government of Ontario's anaphylaxis policy, please click here and you can read about our new request regarding soy-based *nut* butters here

NEW NUTRITIONAL GUIDELINES

The Ontario Ministry of Education's new School Food and Beverage Policy came into effect on September 1st, 2011. For information on this new policy, please visit www.ontario.ca/healthyschools and for a great resource for nutritious lunches and snacks, visit www.eatrightontario.ca.

POP TABS

We are collecting pop tabs again this year. The tabs are recycled for cash and the proceeds sent to Ontario March of Dimes to provide a wheel chair for someone in need. Please send your tabs in with your child. There is a collection can in each homeroom class. To date, Mme LaCharity's class has collected the most, followed by Ms. Reeb's class and Mme Beaupré's class. Keep collecting!

Campbell's labels for Education Program

We will continue to collect labels from Campbell's soup and other products for this program. Box is in the school lobby. For more information, contact Kim Sheldrick or see www.labelsforeducation.ca.

MARK HATFIELD - Game Plan for Success!
On Thursday, March 21st, CVESC is presenting Mark Hatfield!

There is a definite process for achieving your dreams! Once you start using it, you WILL find doors opening that you didn't know existed. Mark Hatfield developed his 'Game Plan for Success' while striving to live his dream and be the first person in the history of his university to make it to the NFL. After playing with the Miami Dolphins, the Houston Oilers, and the BC Lions, he used his 'Game Plan' process to live his dream of hosting his own TV show, starring on the Comedy Network and motivating others to achieve their full potential. Perseverance, proper goal setting, and confidence are highlighted.

He will be presenting to grades 6, 7 & 8s during the day and to parents (no kids) in the evening at 7pm on Thursday, March 21st.

Registration information can be found on our flyer.

More information on Mark Hatfield can be found on his website.

Hope to see you there!

SPIRIT DAYS!
We had such wonderful participation by all classes for our Sports Day that TWO winning classes were selected: M. Boudreau's grade 6 class and Ms. Wallace's grade 8 class!

M. Boudreau's class has selected Thursday, March 7th as Favourite Celebrity Day (real or fictional Celebrity).

Ms. Wallace's class has selected Thursday, March 28th for the second March Spirit Day and the theme is Second Halloween. Students are encouraged to wear a costume to school that day, but remember no masks, or weapon-like accessories. It's sure to be a spook-tacular day!

We have great school spirit here at Castor Valley ES!!

UPCOMING WORKSHOP
Improve with Improv

We are excited to welcome Jennifer Laale to our school on April 2nd, 4th, 5th and 8th to deliver her 'Improve with Improv' character building workshops to all our students from grades 1 through 8! These workshops teach the 4 basic building blocks of Improv - Trust, Letting Go of Inhibitions, Listening & Accepting with the goal of nurturing students' inner creativity and enriching their confidence and personal power.

For more information you can visit her site: www.beyourbest.ca
SAVE THE DATE: DR. MAGGIE MAMEN!
CVES Council is pleased to be welcoming award-winning clinical psychologist and best-selling author, Dr. Maggie Mamen on the evening of Thursday, May 9th. Dr. Mamen works with children, adolescents and families in a multidisciplinary private practice in Ottawa and has also worked at Carleton University, the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and the former Carleton Board of Education. She taught courses on child development and childhood exceptionalities for many years, has appeared on radio and TV nationally and internationally and is the author of best-sellers such as The Pampered Child Syndrome, Who's in Charge?, Laughter, Love & Limits, and most recently Understanding Nonverbal Learning Disabilities: A Common-Sense Guide for Parents and Professionals.

She will be speaking to us on the topic of GROWING UP FEELING GOOD: when our children are being bombarded with values that are very different from our own, it is often difficult to know how to establish, protect and encourage their sense of self in an ever-changing, challenging and sometimes even unsafe world. This presentation examines ways that parents can provide a family environment that supports the development of resilience and healthy self-esteem.

Be sure to mark your calendars as this is one presentation you do not want to miss! This event will be open to anyone from our surrounding communities. Look for more information regarding registration as we get closer to the date
FULL-DAY KINDERGARTEN UPDATE
We have heard that an addition has been approved by the board for our school to make full-day kindergarten possible. As you probably know, we will be one of the last schools to implement full-day kindergarten and are slated to do so in September 2014. We have no further details regarding when the construction will start, what it will consist of etc., but will update you when we do!
EQAO
Interested in Learning More about the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO)?

The EQAO is inviting all interested parents to a regional parent forum in Ottawa on Saturday, March 23, 2013, 10:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. The parent forum will be held at the Brookstreet Hotel, 525 Legget Drive, Kanata.

The forum is composed of two sessions:

The first session, "Answering Parents' Top Questions about EQAO Assessments", will be delivered by members of the EQAO School Support and Outreach Team. This presentation will describe EQAO's province-wide assessment program and will inform parents about the EQAO assessments and how parents can work with the school to support their child's learning.

The second session features an educator and author from Queen's University, Dr. Lynda Colgan, who will talk to parents about the importance of mathematics and how parents can encourage their child to see the value of mathematics in everyday life.

The session is free and lunch will be provided, however registration is necessary. Please register by March 20, 2013 by sending an email to pic@ocdsb.ca with your name, email address, and your child's school.
