Sabbatical Time at Messiah

The Ministry Council has approved a three month sabbatical for Pastor Greg and the Messiah Family from June 13th through August 29th. It has been 8 years since our last sabbatical. Pastor Greg's sabbatical will focus on rest and renewal including travel and retreats with Kim, reading and study about transforming congregations in changing communities.

During our shared sabbatical, life at Messiah may be a bit different, but it will go on! Here are some key pieces and information you will need:

1. Worship: Vicar David Mayen will lead a majority of our worship services and preach once a month.

Lay members of Messiah will be preaching including: the National Youth Gathering Participants, Sandy Rose, Martin Malley, Jayme Wiederin, Randy Schriener, and Sam Everson. In addition, Assistants to the Bishop, Richard Sheridan and Rebecca Sheridan will each be with us on a Sunday to lead worship and preach. We will also be lead by our regular Assisting Ministers at 8:30 and by Assisting Ministers at 10:30.

2. Pastoral Care:  Our Pastoral Care Team of Doni Schroeder, Louise Kvasnicka, Sharon Dickman and Donna Bright will continue to visit our homebound members and do hospital follow-up. Erin Kampschnieder, Director of Discipleship, has been contracted for additional hours this summer to cover hospital and crisis calls. She, along with Jean Menard in the office, will serve as "first responders." If you have any pastoral care needs contact them first. Vicar David Mayen will be available this summer for pastoral care needs and Pastors Erik Boye, Mark Fry, Wenda Fry and Glenn Harless will also be available for crisis and funerals. They can also be contacted through Erin or Jean.

3. Faith Formation: As the sabbatical is happening during the summer months, there is little scheduled for faith formation. However, lay teams are in place to do the planning and preparation for next fall. When September rolls around we will hit the ground running with another year of growing disciples!

4.Mobile Food Pantry: The MFP will continue during the summer months under passionate, capable leadership as it has all year.

5. Office hours and contacts: Office hours are 8:00 am - 3:00 pm Monday through Thursday and 8:00 am - 12 noon Fridays. The office phone number is 402.331.5510. For emergencies outside of office hours contact (in this order):

Vicar David Mayen (402) 812-4317

Erin Kampschnieder, Director of Discipleship:   402.990.3192

Stewardship

August 2015

Seizing our Role as Stewards

"You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things."-

Matthew 25:23

A few years ago, a biographer researched the life of the Duke of Wellington. He had no difficulty tracing the major events of his life, but pushing beyond public knowledge to an understanding of the private side of the Duke remained difficult. Then this researcher came across a box of his financial records. When the researcher learned what the Duke had done with his money, he finally discovered the Duke's deepest values and most important priorities.

If someone were to come across our financial records a hundred years from now, what would our check registers or our Quicken files say about us? Would we be embarrassed by our use of money? Would our financial records give any sign that we sought to live as faithful stewards of the treasures God had entrusted to us?

We don't use the word "steward" very much in our culture. The only steward most of us meet is the one who brings us a cup of coffee or a bag of peanuts on a flight. But in biblical times, stewards were among the most important people in society. A steward had command over the resources of another.

In a world without fax machines, cell phones, or pagers, a wealthy man had no choice but to entrust his holdings to his steward while he was away from his estate.

In the parable from Matthew, Jesus teaches that all of us are stewards entrusted by God with vast wealth. Even the steward who received just one talent was given a fortune worth the equivalent of thirty-five years of daily wages.

But exercising our stewardship is often intimidating. Whenever we use our gifts, we risk what we think might be failure. It's tempting to think that if God is really so powerful, God hardly needs our meager efforts to multiply his wealth!

Each of us faces the temptation of compromising our calling. Is it really so evil to do nothing with the resources God has left in our keeping? Jesus' parable answers this question with a resounding yes! As the master illustrates, God treats us severely when we offer excuses to justify our reluctance to be stewards.

It's good to know that another option is open to us. We can seize our role as stewards with the eagerness of the first two stewards in the parable. Both of these faithful stewards multiply the master's resources. And both receive the same reward at their master's return: "Well done, good and faithful servant!" (Matt. 25:21).

At the end of time, will we hear those same words from our Lord?

Pastoral Care News-pastoral care

During Pastor Greg's Sabbatical, pastoral care will continue under the leadership of our fantastic Pastoral Care Team, Parish Nurse, Doni Schroeder, Director of Discipleship, Erin Kampschnieder and Vicar David Mayen. We have also contracted with local Lutheran pastors for additional care if needed and to officiate at funerals. If you are in need of any type of pastoral care, a visit, or experiencing a crisis, call the church office (402-331-5510) or after hours in an emergency contact Erin at 402-990-3192 or Vicar David at 402-812-4317.

It takes everyone in our Messiah Family to extend God's care, compassion, encouragement and love to our sisters and brothers who are hurting, lonely and sick. Thank you to all who extend Christ's compassion! You are indeed about God's work with your hands! We are always looking for members gifted with a caring passion to visit our shut-ins and to do hospital stay follow-up visits. Contact Pastor Greg if you would like to learn more. A Special Thank You to Sharon Dickman, Louise Kvasnicka, Doni Schroeder, and Donna Bright for their pastoral care ministry!

Please note:  If you or someone close to you is hospitalized, please notify Pastor Greg or the Church Office so that we may provide pastoral support  during your illiness.  HIPPA laws prevent hospitals from sharing this information with us.

Food Ministry - How Can YOU Help?

1.    Financial Contributions.

 a.Sponsor a Mobile Food Pantry.

The cost of each distribution varies according to how much is free food from the USDA and how much is purchased from the Food Bank. The charges have ranged from $500 - $1,000. Considering that cost has purchased between 25,000 - 30,000 lbs. of food for distribution, that is a whole lot of bang for the buck!   Consider gathering funds from your fellowship group at church, neighbors or co-workers and sponsoring a Mobile Food Pantry! A donation of any amount will go to feed the hungry.

Use this QR code to make a donation today!

 2.    Your time and relationship

a.We assist a core of families by delivering food from the Mobile Food Pantry directly to their homes.  If you would be interested in personally delivering, please contact Doni.

b.Participation in Mobile Food Pantry distribution.   We need 50 - 75 people for each distribution.   Volunteer participation to date has been WONDERFUL!   Thank you, and please continue - we need you!

Nkuu Kati Visitors

I was very blessed to meet such wonderful people in Tanzania when I visited Nkuu Kati in January, 2013, and July, 2014. They opened their hearts to their guests and made us feel so welcomed and loved.

While there, I had the opportunity to walk about the parish with various parishioners. Two of our escorts, Luka Nkya and Samuel Kweka, loved showing us around the parish and answering our questions that we had about life in Nkuu Kati. They are both local farmers. Samuel once worked in the forestry industry and is very instrumental in the renovation of the old sanctuary. He also is the one in charge of the student sponsorships that we have with the Nkuu Kati students. Luka helps with the translation of the letters we receive and send to our students.

I am very excited that Luka and Samuel will be visiting Messiah in late September/early October. They have their visas and are making final plans for their journey across the Atlantic. As you know, Tanzania citizens live very frugally and don't have much money. If you would like to help with some of their travel expenses, please mark your donation "Tanzanian Visitors."

More information will be forthcoming as the time of their visit gets closer.   If you have any questions, please talk to Marty Malley, Eric Blomberg, or me.

David and I are very thankful for the support our church family has shown us during the loss of our mother.  Words cannot simply express how grateful we are for the extra kindness shown to us.  The visits made by Doni Schroeder, Sue Simmons and other members gave us great peace and comfort.  The food brought in, cards and words of sympathy were greatly appreciated.
God's blessings to you all!
