Messiah Messenger May 2015

Pastor Greg's Column

So, I'm going on sabbatical. "Where are you going?" "What are you going to do?"

Good questions!

In the Church, sabbaticals are a time to rest and be renewed in the call to leadership. Last time I went on sabbatical, our (and I use the first person plural because these sabbaticals really are "ours" -- mine and yours, the family of Messiah) focus was on the rest and time away as well as time exploring and learning about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus as opposed to just a church member.

This time will also be a time for rest and getting away. You will be hearing stories and experiencing worship leadership with a variety of people -- family members as well as folk from the broader church. This will be a great break from the usual and from experience, I know we'll refresh and renew. For me, it is rest and getting away with Kim. She and I know that ministry leadership for the future will mean more of an intentional partnership for the two of us. What might that look like? What are the possibilities? What will it take to make that happen? Those are the kind of questions we want to explore this summer. We want to get away, not only with the trip to the Holy Land, but also with a weeklong clergy/spouse retreat and other shorter trips where we can enjoy some of God's great creation and listen for God's voice. So, we will be gone most of the month of June and then be "in and out" during July as we visit Chicago, Kansas City, Minneapolis and some small towns of my family roots. Of course August is back to school for Kim, so I will spend that time "bringing it all home" through personal retreat time at my favorite spiritual home -- The Benedict Center.

As far as a ministry direction focus, we (you and I) will be exploring what it means to be church in a rapidly changing world where the church has been marginalized. What does "church" look like moving forward? How do we remain relevant in this changing world? How do we "speak" the gospel to a world that for the most part doesn't really care? What does it mean to be a neighborhood church? Those will be the kind of questions we will want to be in conversation around. You will do that through two main avenues: 1) conversations and 2) more conversations! Yeah, that's kind of a trick answer, but here's what I mean. You will be given a reading list. Read as much or as little as you want, but don't ever say you don't know what's going on! If you read the books, when I get back you will be ready for action! Along with the reading list, leaders of our congregation will lead discussion groups on particular books from the list. You will be invited to join as many of those "book clubs" as you would like. It's always better to read together!

Next, we have invited two people from the Nebraska Synod to come and share with you during our sabbatical. Rebecca Sheridan is co-Director of Evangelical Mission for the synod. She will come and lead worship and preach one Sunday. Rebecca's "specialty" is helping congregations transform for this uncertain future. Rebecca is also spending time with our Ministry Council in May to talk about the possibility of Messiah joining a Learning Community for planning and directing our future.

Then, Rich Sheridan, the other co-Director of Evangelical Mission for the Nebraska Synod and Rebecca's husband, will also visit with you. Rich's "specialty" is developing congregations in ethnic specific communities. In our case, that is with the South Sudanese, Dinka community. We know that whatever happens, Messiah's future will always be deeply interconnected with our brothers and sister who have begun a new life here in Omaha and who know Messiah as their faith family. We want to build a strong, sustainable relationship!

In the meantime I will also be reading. I'll finish whatever I have left from your reading list and then move on to other stuff. I look forward to returning and continuing the conversation, sharing with one another what we have each learned!

This will all move us into a very exciting future! I know that God has amazing plans for His people at Messiah! The only question is, Will we exhibit the expectant faith, bold courage and humble obedience to go where God is leading?

Above all, please wrap this journey and sabbatical in prayer! Let's commit to praying for one another. Let's pray for faith. Let's pray for clarity. And most of all, let's pray that God will be at work among us in mighty ways, advancing the Kingdom!

Stewardship

May 2015

Who's My Real Boss?

The Scripture spells it out: "Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all of your might." Ecclesiastes 9:10. The Lord expects us to do the best we possibly can. There is value in work.

Principle #9
Work Hard

Our real boss is the Lord, and He is pleased with hard work in pursuit of excellence. Our work should never be at a level that people equate with mediocrity. Our work is a reflection of our spiritual relationship with our Lord.

This does not mean that we have to be perfect and never make mistakes in our work.   The Lord expects us to do the best we can using the gifts, skills and abilities He has uniquely given us.

Our work is a gift. It is designed to develop character. A job is not just a means to earn money, it is also intended to produce godly character in the life of the worker...whether we are doctors, homemakers, secretaries, salespeople, managers or blue-collar workers.

Yet, as important as working hard and diligently at what we do is, there also needs to be balance. Some people work so much that they neglect the other aspects of their lives. If our jobs demand so much of our time and energy that we neglect our relationship with Christ and/or our family, then we are working too hard. We are forgetting the importance of balance in our lives.

"Workaholics" must take precautions to guard against sacrificing what's really important. The gift of work is just one of many gifts which God has given us!

The most important question we need to ask everyday as we begin our work is:

For whom do I work? The answer is: I work for Christ.

Sabbatical Time at Messiah

The Ministry Council has approved a three month sabbatical for Pastor Greg and the Messiah Family from June 13th through August 29th. It has been 8 years since our last sabbatical. Pastor Greg's sabbatical will focus on rest and renewal including travel and retreats with Kim, reading and study about transforming congregations in changing communities.

During our shared sabbatical, life at Messiah may be a bit different, but it will go on! Here are some key pieces and information you will need:

1. Worship: Vicar David Mayen will lead a majority of our worship services and preach once a month.

Lay members of Messiah will be preaching including: the National Youth Gathering Participants, Sandy Rose, Martin Malley, Jayme Wiederin, Randy Schriener, and Sam Everson. In addition, Assistants to the Bishop, Richard Sheridan and Rebecca Sheridan will each be with us on a Sunday to lead worship and preach. We will also be lead by our regular Assisting Ministers at 8:30 and by Assisting Ministers at 10:30.

2. Pastoral Care: It is hoped that Vicar David will be available this summer. However, as of press time, this has not been confirmed. Our Pastoral Care Team of Doni Schroeder, Louise Kvasnicka, Sharon Dickman and Donna Bright will continue to visit our homebound members and do hospital follow-up. Erin Kampschnieder, Director of Discipleship, has been contracted for additional hours this summer to cover hospital and crisis calls. She, along with Jean Menard in the office, will serve as "first responders." If you have any pastoral care needs contact them first. Pastors Erik Boye, Mark Fry, Wenda Fry and Glenn Harless will also be available for crisis and funerals. They can also be contacted through Erin or Jean.

3. Faith Formation: As the sabbatical is happening during the summer months, there is little scheduled for faith formation. (But do check out the fantastic New Vacation Bible School, explained elsewhere in this newsletter!) However, lay teams are in place to do the planning and preparation for next fall. When September rolls around we will hit the ground running with another year of growing disciples!

4.Mobile Food Pantry: The MFP will continue during the summer months under passionate, capable leadership as it has all year.

5. Office hours and contacts: Office hours are 8:00 am - 3:00 pm Monday through Thursday and 8:00 am - 12 noon Fridays. The office phone number is 402.331.5510. For emergencies outside of office hours contact (in this order):

Vicar David Mayen (402) 812-4317

Erin Kampschnieder, Director of Discipleship:   402.990.3192

Ministry Council Officer (Elections will be May 2nd, so contact information will be posted after that).

Thank you to all who extend Christ's compassion! You are indeed about God's work with your hands! We are always looking for members gifted with a caring passion to visit our shut-ins and to do hospital stay follow-up visits. Contact Pastor Greg if you would like to learn more. Food Ministry - How Can YOU Help?

1.    Financial Contributions.

 a.Sponsor a Mobile Food Pantry.

The cost of each distribution varies according to how much is free food from the USDA and how much is purchased from the Food Bank. The charges have ranged from $500 - $1,000. Considering that cost has purchased between 25,000 - 30,000 lbs. of food for distribution, that is a whole lot of bang for the buck!   Consider gathering funds from your fellowship group at church, neighbors or co-workers and sponsoring a Mobile Food Pantry! A donation of any amount will go to feed the hungry.

Use this QR code to make a donation today!

 2.    Your time and relationship

a.We assist a core of families by delivering food from the Mobile Food Pantry directly to their homes.  If you would be interested in personally delivering, please contact Doni.

b.Participation in Mobile Food Pantry distribution.   We need 50 - 75 people for each distribution.   Volunteer participation to date has been WONDERFUL!   Thank you, and please continue - we need you!

LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF  --  BASKETS OF PROMISE

WELCA SAYS THANKS

The LWR lenten project "Baskets of Promise" was a huge success     WELCA says THANKS to everyone who participated in some way.   There are too many people to individually mention but the ladies on the lunch committee, assembly committee, finance  & shipping committee, and the senior youth undertook a BIG project and made it look easy.

Messiah shipped 21 boxes which held 205 health kits  --  WOW!!!    That was twice the amount we estimated.   We had a few items left over and they will go to a needy cause.  Brown Transfer gave us a discount on the shipping charges which came out  of the church budget.  Anyone wishing to replenish the funds can write a check to Messiah and put "Shipping Fund" in the memo section.

WELCA hopes everyone enjoyed getting together to assemble the kits, enjoy lunch, and each others company.
