Preventing and Responding to Sentinel Events in Surgery:
This presentation will discuss sentinel events and how to prevent them. It will also cover how to identify gaps in processes that could lead to harm. We will review what events to report and who to report them to so knowledge can be shared thus hopefully preventing someone else from harm. Patient safety is at the top of everyone's list in healthcare. The accrediting agencies, government agencies, third party payers and employers are looking over our shoulders to make sure we, as providers of care, are constantly looking for ways to ensure each patient is safe from harm when they enter our perioperative world. We as providers are implementing ways to prevent harm to patients because no one goes into medicine to harm another person.
Educational Objectives:
1. Define the term "Sentinel Event".
2. Identify Potential "Sentinel Events" that are reported.
3. Discuss ways to prevent a "Sentinel Event" in the OR.
