Why Titanium?

Titanium is a material that has many extraordinary benefits within the medical field, particularly with regard to surgical instruments. Most notably:

  • It is harder than some steel, making it very durable and long-lasting
  • Despite its density, titanium is extremely light-weight
  • Titanium is very resistant to corrosion, while oxidation can occur, it does not rust
  • Titanium possesses an innate ability to fight corrosion from bodily fluids
  • The most common color of anodized titanium is blue, which is fairly non-reflective
  • Titanium can tolerate heat of up to 440º C or 824º F, making it safe for Immediate Use/"Flash" Sterilization
  • It is non-magnetic, and therefore does not cause adverse reactions with other steel instruments or equipment
Is it in the budget?

Medical grade titanium is often more costly than other metals like stainless steel because of the time, energy, and care required to extract it.  Ambler Surgical titanium instruments are of the highest quality available, and believe it or not, within reach for most any budget. We offer many of the most sought-after ophthalmic instruments in both stainless steel and titanium. In many cases, you can choose the titanium option for just $15-20 more per instrument! Furthermore, most Ambler Surgical titanium instruments are covered under our Lifetime Repair and Refurbishment Program. This means we will help you to keep your instrument in perfect working condition by completing basic wear and tear repairs at no charge to you, for the life of the instrument. This is just more way that Ambler Surgical is providing Ophthalmic Instruments for Life. *For a full list of program limitations please click here.

Buyer Beware

Consider the Source

As with all instrumentation, it is very important to consider the source in order be sure that you are getting the very best quality for your money.  Some companies rely on titanium which comes from Pakistan.  It is often softer, and not of the same medical grade quality that should be utilized for surgical instruments.  Ambler Surgical uses a Medical Grade 5 titanium (alpha-beta titanium alloy, 6AL 4V ELI) which is one of the most widely used in the medical industry. It has become known for its quality and durability.  Our titanium is selected primarily from one supply house that has consistently provided our technicians with premium quality material.

Consider the Tool

Titanium is not the best material for EVERY surgical instrument. For example, while titanium scissors often maintain sharpness longer than their stainless steel counterparts, it can be difficult to get that same razor sharp edge again once they become dull. Stainless steel is often the preferred material for Instruments like ophthalmic spatulas. They require some malleability, and titanium tends to be more brittle and can snap easier when pressure is applied.

The Bottom Line

Titanium instrumentation can be extremely helpful to surgeons due to its high strength to weight ratio. It is invaluable to O.R. technicians and sterile processing departments because of its high resistance to corrosion. Ambler Surgical titanium instruments are not only affordable, but are constructed from the highest quality titanium alloy available in the market today.
