Massage Therapy:
It Does A Body Good

Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork is used to target and reduce pain and tension in specific areas of the body and will result in an overall sense of relaxation. Techniques using light to firm touch is used to relax muscles and increase circulation, providing the nutrients necessary for healing. Bodywork can be used in conjunction with conventional medical treatment of illness and injury to enhance the body's natural healing process by reducing recovery time, as well as alleviate pain, stress and revitalize the body. On a regular basis, bodywork enhances health and helps balance the body, mind and spirit.

Swedish Massage results in increased blood circulation, mental and physical relaxation, decreased stress and muscle tension, and improved range of motion. It involves flowing strokes using the hands, forearms, and elbows of the therapist to manipulate the superficial layers of the muscles and joints to improve mental and physical health.

Deep Tissue Massage is used to release pain and chronic patterns of muscular tension. The therapist may use fingers, thumbs, and elbows to provide slow strokes and focused pressure at deeper layers of the muscle. This type of manipulation stimulates circulation and promotes detoxification and oxygenation of stagnant tissues. When nutrients are brought to the cells, repair occurs at the cellular level and damaged muscle and connective tissue will heal. As a result, nerve entrapment is corrected, inflammation, edema and pain is relieved, and joint range of motion will increase.

Hot Stone Massage uses a variety of large and small smooth heated stones to melt away tension and stress, resulting in deep relaxation. Swedish, Deep Tissue, and Acupressure techniques are combined to achieve maximum results.

Pregnancy Massage focuses on the special needs of the healthy mother-to-be as her body goes through the dramatic changes of the childbirth experience. This is done only after the first trimester to enhance the function of muscles and joints, improve circulation and relieves mental and physical fatigue.

Myofascial Release is a gentle technique used with other techniques to stretch and correct the fascia, or the connective tissue that surrounds all of the muscles, bones, and organs of the body resulting in pain relief.

Shiatsu/Acupressure: Touching, pressing, or holding the body along acupoints primarily with the hands, thumbs or fingers to relax the body at a deep level. Treatments are done while the client is fully clothed.

Let's Break Down Chinese Medicine

What is Chinese medicine?

Chinese medicine is a system of medicine partly based on the idea that an energy, called qi (say "chee"), flows along pathways in the body called meridians. In this belief, if the flow of qi along these meridians is blocked or unbalanced, illness can occur. In China, doctors have practiced Chinese medicine for thousands of years, and it is gaining in popularity in many Western countries.

Causes of qi imbalance are thought to involve:

External forces, such as wind, cold, or heat.

Internal forces, such as emotions of joy, anger, or fear.

Lifestyle factors, such as poor diet, too little sleep, or too much alcohol.

Another important concept in Chinese medicine is the concept of yin and yang. In this approach, all things, including the body, are composed of opposing forces called yin and yang. Health is said to depend on the balance of these forces. Chinese medicine focuses on maintaining the yin-yang balance to maintain health and prevent illness.

Chinese medicine doctors look at the balance of body, mind, and spirit to determine how to restore qi, the yin-yang balance, and good health.

What is Chinese medicine used for?

People use Chinese medicine to treat many illnesses from asthma and allergies to cancer and infertility. Chinese doctors may use several types of treatment to restore qi balance.

Chinese medicine therapies include:

Acupuncture, which uses thin metal needles placed along the body's meridians.

Acupressure, which uses the hands or fingers to apply direct pressure to points along the body's meridians.

Chinese herbs, combinations of herbs, roots, powders, or animal substances to help restore balance in the body.

Cupping, which uses warm air in glass jars to create suction placed on areas of the body to help stimulate qi.

Diet. Yin and yang foods can help restore the yin-yang balance in the body. (Look for more on this in the next newsletters)

Massage (tui na) on specific areas of the body or along the body's meridians.

Moxibustion, which uses small amounts of heated plant fiber (moxa, or Chinese mugwort) on specific areas of the body.

Qi gong, which uses movement, breathing techniques, and meditation.

Food and Drug Interactions You Need To Know About

Kale and Blood Thinners

Dark leafy greens like kale (but also: broccoli, chard and red leaf lettuces) are full of fiber and important vitamins and nutrients, including vitamin K -- an important antioxidant that also helps fortify bones and support brain function. The problem? It's also a coagulant, so it promotes blood clotting. If you're on a blood thinner, a healthful bowl of kale salad could counteract the work your medicine is doing.

Dairy And Antibiotics

If you're taking a course of quinolones-based antibiotics, beware of anything rich in calcium, which can interfere with the body's ability to absorb the medication. Antibiotics made with quinolones include popular drugs like Ciprofloxacin and other treatments often used for common ailments like urinary tract infections, pneumonia and bronchitis.

Stinky Cheese, Cured Meat And Antidepressants

If you're into the gourmet tasting platters at pretty much any wine bar, beware. Both cured meats (salami, prosciutto, et al) and moldy, stinky cheeses like parmesan and blue cheese contain an amino acid called tyramine that can interfere with MAOI-based antidepressants.

That's because tyramine, which also occurs naturally in the body and works to regulate blood sugar, can start to build up to dangerous levels within those who take MAOIs.

That's because MAOIs also inhibit an enzyme, monoamine oxidase, that helps to break down tyramine in the blood stream. The body will naturally calibrate tyramine levels, but consuming excess tyramine can lead to a dangerous spike in blood pressure. The Mayo Clinic has a full list of foods high in tyramine.

Caffeine And, Well, A Lot Of Things

Caffeine can interact with a wide range of medications. What's more, some medications interfere with the body's response to caffeine. Quinolones antibiotics, for example, can impede the body's breakdown of caffeine, leading to extreme caffeine side effects like jitteriness and rapid heart beat. Estrogen, asthma medications and anti-anxiety medications can also have this effect.

What's more, caffeine hinders blood clotting, so those who take anticoagulants may find their blood so thinned that they experience bleeding.

Licorice And Heart Medicine

The FDA recommends avoiding licorice if you're on digoxin, a drug for heart failure or abnormal heart rhythm because the herb-based candy can increase the risk of digoxin's toxic effects.

Those taking angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors for high blood pressure should also watch out for licorice, which can diminish their effectiveness and even lead to a build-up of potassium.
