National Voter Registration Day, September 27



Are you registered to vote in the upcoming election on November 8, 2016? Have you moved or changed your name? In 2008, 6 million Americans didn't vote because they missed a registration deadline or didn't know how to register. Make sure you're not left out! The registration deadline for the November Presidential Election is Tuesday, October 11, 2016. Your application must be received in the Voter Registrar's office or postmarked at least 30 days before the election for you to be eligible to vote in that election.


To check your registration status and to get more information,  visit www.votetexas.gov or call 2-1-1 Texas to get information for your county's Voter Registrar's Office.

PLAY2LEARN  - Clara Mounce Public Library

The Clara Mounce Public Library would like to invite any  families with toddlers (18 mos. -  2 years) to come to a Parent/Child Workshop series, PLAY2LEARN. This event is a special 5-week  program where toddlers (ages 1-2) and their parent/ caregiver play together to develop their child's early literacy skills. Each week, a different topic in early childhood development will be featured (not necessarily in this order): early literacy, nutrition, child development, speech and hearing, and motor skills. For each week, one or more community professionals will be on hand to circulate around the room informally throughout the session to be available to answer parent/ caregiver's questions and concerns about their child and family in a casual, non-threatening environment. Free Pizza Day - BVCOG

Mighty Slice Pizza will give a 14-inch slice of pizza to everyone who brings in canned food items on Thursday, September 29th , 2016. All canned goods will be donated to the Brazos Valley Food Bank. Free Pizza Day has a goal of contributing 250 pounds of goods to the Brazos Valley Food Bank. The event will be held at Mighty Slice, located at the Backyard on Northgate, from 11am - closing hours. Residents of Bryan-College Station are encouraged to come on September 29th with canned foods in hand to give back while enjoying pizza on the house. This one-day event is focused on creating opportunities for our community to take action for hunger relief, as well as set an example for restaurants to become part of the solution. Books and a Blanket, a local nonprofit organization, is inviting the community out for an evening of burritos and entertainment provided by local students to promote and support literacy among young children in need.  Kicking off at 6 p.m., the event will feature a silent auction, meal and musical performances -- all provided by local students, who will act as hosts and waiters for the evening. Notable items in the auction include a football signed by Texas A&M head football coach Kevin Sumlin and a large gift basket filled with various A&M memorabilia. Proceeds from the silent auction and ticket sales will go to Books and a Blanket, a College Station-based organization founded in 2012 by local sisters Harper and Maggie Cunningham. Each year, the siblings donate reading materials to young children in the Brazos Valley before their winter break from schoolTickets are $40 each and are available online at booksandablanket.com until September 26, 2016. Voices For Children, Inc., CASA of Brazos Valley is looking for community members who are interested in being trained and sworn-in as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA).  CASAs advocate for a child or sibling group through the child welfare system until the child or siblings can be placed in a safe, permanent, and nurturing home. They serve as a link between the child and the court system to ensure that the child is not lost in the cracks of the larger foster care system.  The 30-hour training takes place in ten sessions over a four-week time frame and is offered at no cost to the trainee, but an application and interview process is required prior to training.  Please call 979-822-9700 or email  [email protected] for more information or visit our website at www.vfcbrazos.org.

13th Annual Buddy Walk - Down Syndrome Associate of Brazos Valley

The 13th Annual Buddy Walk will be held on October 2, 2016 from 11 A.M. to 3 P.M. The walk begins at 1:30 P.M. in Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater. Buddy Walk 2015 featured activities for the kids, fellowship, music, entertainment, great food and the one-mile walk. Buddy Walk is an event where anyone can come set up a tent or canopy, bring lawn chairs or blankets. Your support of Buddy Walk enables a variety of educational and social programs throughout the year to benefit people with Down syndrome, from birth through adulthood. Some of these programs include a summer program in which students work on reading, math and independence skills; sign language classes; dances; respite nights; and a computer class. Grind4God Ministries is having a Homeless Hygiene Drive! Most needed items include deodorant, tooth paste, shampoo, conditioner, baby wipes, diapers, lotion, tissue rolls, bar soap, razors, socks, and bottled water.
