2016 Grimes County Senior Citizen's Day

Senior Citizen's Day at the Grimes County Fair will take place on Wednesday, June 8, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Grimes County Fairgrounds. This free event will engage attendees with health services provided by Grimes St. Joseph Health Center through education, demonstrations, screenings and information on lifestyle changes to improve overall health and well-being. With door prizes, bingo and a complimentary lunch provided by Mid South Synergy, we invite you to join us! United Way Day of Action 2016

Gather your coworkers, friends, or family to assemble Baby Bundles on June 21st at St. Joseph Catholic Church Activity Center, Bryan, TX for United Way's Day of Action 2016. Two one-hour volunteer shifts are available at 8:30 a.m and 10:00 a.m with a kick-off breakfast for all volunteers at 9:30am.  Employees are encouraged to wear their company's attire. Day of Action is an opportunity for communities to come together and address the issues that matter most to them. This year, we're tackling access to education and early literacy in the Brazos Valley by providing 1,000 babies with a book and "baby basics" through Baby Bundles- a tote packed with a book, toy, baby basic toiletries, and other helpful resources on family budgeting and community resources. Baby Bundles will be distributed to families through the labor & delivery departments of area hospitals just after the baby is born. For more information or to sign up, visit www.uwbv.org.

From greeting child clients and their families at our facility to helping with fundraisers and awareness activities, we need your help. Volunteers make such a difference in the lives of the children and families who come to Scotty's House. Riders on the Orphan Train- Sponsored by Two Rivers Heritage Foundation

On Saturday, June 18, Two Rivers Heritage Foundation will be sponsoring a presentation on the orphan trains and their young riders. Between 1854 and 1929 over 250,000 orphans and unwanted children were taken out of New York City and given away at train stations across America. The last train came to Sulphur Springs, Texas in 1929. Texas received around 2500 orphans. Grimes county became home to around 24 children. Descendants are welcome to share their story. CASA Advocate Initial Training Begins

Voices For Children, Inc., CASA of Brazos Valley is looking for community members who are interested in being trained and sworn-in as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). CASAs advocate for a child or sibling group through the child welfare system until the child or siblings can be placed in a safe, permanent, and nurturing home. They serve as a link between the child and the court system to ensure that the child is not lost in the cracks of the larger foster care system.  The 30-hour training takes place in eight sessions over a three-week time frame and is offered at no cost to the trainee, but an application and interview process is required prior to training.  Please call 979-822-9700 or email [email protected] for more information or visit our website at www.vfcbrazos.org.

Starlight Music Series

The Starlight Music Series is a free music showcase that takes place every year over the summer. This outdoor concert series is held at Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater and features bands representing a variety of styles and genres.  Refreshments and souvenirs are available at the festival, but attendees are welcome to bring their own small coolers.
