OCTOBER, 2014
Actively Waiting
Advent brings a bit of a conflict for us.  On the one hand, it is most certainly a time of waiting with expectation as we look forward to the birth of Jesus and celebrating Christmas.  On the other hand, as soon as Thanksgiving leftovers are put away, Christmas music, lights, and shopping center Santas appear with abundance as the season brings with it a sense of arrival.  At the same time, the Christmas season has arrived, and, for the Church, it is not yet, given that for the four weeks before Christmas it is the season of Advent.

A Giving Tree for Mary's Place

In the spirit of giving and generosity, we will place a Charlie Brown Tree with 30 gift tags for Mary's Place in the Narthex.  Each tag will be for one of the following:

  • a gift card for an adult
  • $20 for a pair of shoes
  • a request for a child's toy
All gifts must be returned to APCC unwrapped with the tag attached, by December 10.  If you have any questions, contact Twila Meeks or Stephan Gerhardt.  In the meantime, let's make this Christmas a very special one for the women and children of Mary's Place.
Gathering of Women

On Sunday, December 7 at 12:30 pm, the Gathering of Women will convene in the Weld Room, where Kathy Dawson

will lead a brief but fun-filled session.  After all, God gave us to this world, to this time, and this place - we are gifts meant to bring joy to the world.  There are as many combinations of of God-given gifts as there are people. What are some of yours?

Won't you join us?

In Celebration of Life: Honoring the Transformation of Loss

During the holiday season, our losses can keep us from feeling the joy of connection and community.  Honor yourself by joining Poet, Therapist and Facilitator, Maiah Merino on Saturday December 13 from 1-4 pm or Sunday December 14 from 1:30-4:30 pm, for a three-hour gathering in the format of a Talking Circle.  You will be given the opportunity to acknowledge the strength of your life through the losses that have transformed you.  Maiah creates a safe space which allows participants to speak to, honor, and acknowledge their own life stories in a structured way.

This gathering takes place in the Colonial Room.

Space is limited, so sign-up now! (12 spots only each day)

Cost: $25-$50, sliding fee

Please contact Maiah Merino to sign-up, or for further information: maiah.merino@gmail.com

Friend to Friend Christmas Basket

This annual fundraiser is for the Greater Seattle Area Friend to Friend America Volunteer program in nursing, assisted living, retirement centers and group homes.  Tickets for the basket will be sold during fellowship hour on December 14 and 21.  Each ticket is $1, or you may purchase 6 for $5.  Both tickets and money can be placed in container provided. The winners will be announced on December 21.

Friend to Friend America volunteers have been making friends for 40 years.  If you would like to be a friend for someone in your community, you can now apply on our web site at ftfa.org. Also follow us on Facebook or call 855-711-3832 to reach the Des Moines, WA office.

Thank you! - Berlena Brock, West Seattle Chapter Coordinator
Christmas Poinsettias

To sign-up and help decorate the church with a poinsettia plant for the holiday season, visit the Information Table in Stuart Hall during fellowship hour, or email the Church Office.  You are not required to make a donation in order to honor someone, however, please be aware the poinsettias are not a budgeted expense, so we need to collect enough extra offerings to cover the cost ($7 per plant).  Poinsettias will be offered through Sunday, December 7.  The plants can be picked up and taken home on December 24, after the Christmas Eve service.  On the sign-up sheet, please note if the plant is in honor or memory of someone, and kindly provide their name(s).

Thank you for your generosity!

NEW MEMBER CLASS

A new member class is beginning soon.  If you are interested in joining All Pilgrims, please visit the Information Table during fellowship hour in Stuart Hall.  Classes will be Sunday mornings in December, before worship.
