PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE:

Dear Parents,

As we began our liturgical season of Lent with our Ash Wednesday Liturgy on February 13th,  I would like to thank both Ms. White for preparing the Liturgy and Father Galen for taking the time to celebrate with us.  This is a time to prepare our hearts and minds to think of Jesus who lived and died for us. Let us enter into the mystery of His great love so that at Easter we will share His life and His love for us more fully.

We are almost halfway through Lent and perhaps it is time to examine our journey. I have been a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Parish for many years and as a Catholic Leader it is discouraging to witness the Spirit fade at our Church. Our Parish has been through a lot and it should be the strength of our Faith that heals all. We should remember the triad of HOME, SCHOOL and PARISH. It is a triad because all three are important pillars in yours and your children's Faith Development. All three are responsible for ensuring that your children are prepared to meet any challenge in life and without one pillar, everything falls apart. Father Galen and I are working together to bring our students and community together. For example, our students attend mass on a regular basis with the parish community, we are working together to celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi on Sunday June 2nd and Father Galen is visiting classrooms every second Thursday to assist in Faith Development to name a few.

Church is an extremely important part of the triad and as Parents and as a School we should be working together to develop a strong Faith in God in our children. It is not necessarily about the Priest who is celebrating mass, but being present in the House of God and taking the time to slow down and listen to His message through the Gospels and Readings. As we approach Easter, we need to remember that Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice for us to ensure that we as Catholics have the freedom to practice our Faith knowing that God will always forgive and love us. It is time as a Faith Community to let go of past events in our Parish, forgive as God did and renew our commitment to God. As parents, you have chosen a Catholic Education for your children to reinforce the core Christian Values as written in the bible, but the school can't do it alone.

I encourage you to awaken your faith during this Lenten Season and remember the importance and need of all three pillars of HOME, SCHOOL and PARISH and without one, we are not complete. It is my Hope that those who have left Blessed Sacrament Parish or any Parish, for whatever reason, will return so that once again our/your Community of Spirit and Faith can grow and flourish.

God Bless,

Michael Schreider

MARCH BREAK:

Our March Break this year is March 11 - 15. Dismissal time on March 8 will be at the regular time - 3:40 p.m. The staff at Corpus Christi Catholic School wish you and your family a relaxing and enjoyable time.

Parking Issues:

I would ask that you refrain from Parking on Lyon Street when you drop off or pick up your children at the beginning or end of the school day. School Council did send out alternative places to park at these times and if require another copy, please feel free to contact the school and one will be sent home with your child. As well, during thse times, Lyon street on the school side is designated as a school bus loading zone, which includes school vans.  We have asked that the City of Ottawa monitor ALL our bus zones during drop off and pick up times.  Your assistance and cooperation is very much appreciated as we try to ensure that all students come and leave the school in a safe environment.

PARENT COUNCIL NEWS:

Mardi Gras:  Tuesday, February 12 was a special day at Corpus Christi. The gym was transformed into a fun-filled carnival and young and old had a wonderful time playing games, winning prizes and feasting on pizza and pancakes.  Thank you to all the volunteers who helped to set-up, run the games, cook and serve the food and tidy up afterwards.  A big thank-you for all the donations for the children's raffle and the bottle table.  The silent auction was particularly spectacular this year - thank you to everyone who solicited donations and to all those who bid on prizes.  If you have not yet paid for/ claimed a prize, please see Mrs. Boyle in the office.  In all, Mardi Gras raised over $6000 this year - a new record!  This money will be used by council to pay for field trips, sports equipment, Blues in the Schools, technology in the classrooms and many other projects that benefit all our students.  Council would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Reine Monahan and Kathy Unsworth for all their hard work in making Mardi Gras such a success.

Skating Party:  We had a great crowd of parents and students on the Mutchmor rink last Friday for our annual Corpus Christi Skating Party.  The mild weather made for less than perfect ice conditions but lots of smiles and no cold toes!  Thanks to everyone who came out and brought goodies.

Winter Walk to School Day: It was a cold day in February, but that did not stop 133 Corpus students from walking all or part of the way to school on Winter Walk to School Day.  Way to go!  Thanks to the volunteers who handed out prizes and hot chocolate on the school yard and to Mr. Schreider and Mrs. Westwick for leading the walking school buses. Our next iWalk day is Thursday, March 21.  Hopefully we will be walking in lovely spring weather!

Our next school council meeting is: Tuesday, April 9 at 7:30 pm in the library.  All are welcome.  You will find minutes from previous council meetings posted on the school website.

NURSES CORNER:

Your drink is sweeter than you think!

Most of the sugar in your day comes from what you drink. We think about sugar in the food we eat but many popular drinks have a lot of sugar.

Why you should care:

  • Filling up on sugary drinks makes you less hungry for healthier foods.
  • Children's small tummies can fill up on sugar fast.
  • Sugary drinks can cause tooth decay.

When choosing a drink remember:

  • Water is the best choice.
  • Most fruit drinks have no real fruit.
  • Kids watch what you drink: your pick impacts theirs.
  • Read labels.
  • Pick drinks with less sugar.
  • If sugar is first in the ingredient list then it's high in sugar.

Our junior students enjoyed a wonderful day of skiing on February 15 and both the weather and conditions were good. Many thanks go out to Mrs. Ozimkowski  for organizing the many details involved in this activity.  We were fortunate to be joined by many parents who helped make this a very successful activity. Thank you to each and every one from the staff and students of Corpus Christi who are looking forward to next year's ski day!

Our primary students enjoyed a fantastic day of activities which included:  learning about and drawing penguins, Chinese New Year Lesson and Activity, Teamwork Physical Education Game, Bingo and Winter Films.  Students also enjoyed a nice warm cup of hot chocolate. Thanks to Ms. Chiota and Mrs. Bourassa for organizing the primary activity day.

Closing Message:

"The frontiers that separate people from each other can come down if we open our hearts to this vulnerable God. Jesus sent us the Spirit, to change our hearts of stone into hearts of flesh. He became weak and was crucified and died on the cross. The message of Jesus is transfomation. He calls us to open up to others. So the big question will always be, 'Do we want to change? Do we want to open our hearts to the different?Jean Vanier
