Class Reunions
Friday Morning Mass in the Chapel

Friday Morning Mass is held at 7 a.m. each week when school is in session in our school's chapel, located in the Convent.

Open House for John Kirchgassner's Retirement.
Since the 1972-73 school year, McNicholas High School has been blessed to serve as the home of John Kirchgassner, best known to our community as Kirch. Thousands of students have been influenced and mesmerized by his stories over the decades. We hope that you will be able to join Kirch to celebrate his retirement at an open house this Sunday, April 24.  The event will be from 1-3 p.m., and light refreshments will be provided. If the weather is nice, we will be in the school courtyard; if the weather is not cooperative,  we will move to the
caf and student union. If you can join us, please click here.
Connecting the Dots
with Shawn Young

For this month's Connecting the Dots story, we have to go back to the 1950's. Two sisters attended McNicholas: Jaye Marioni Yorio '55, and Gina Marioni Derringer '59. Both were very  instrumental in the history of McNicholas High School.  Derringer Food Company now runs the cafeteria at McNicholas High school , and there is a nice garden spot in memory of Gina on the right side of the convent with the statue of St. Joseph. Jaye was on the first cheerleading squad at McNicholas, and she still is active with her class reunion and the art program here at McNicholas. Jaye sent five children to McNicholas-Matt '78, Mike '80, Lou '81, Karen '84, and Tony '91.  Gina had two daughters that both graduated Beth Derringer Keith '84 and her sister Amy Derringer Chandler '93.  I first met the pair back in my days at Rocket High.  They were friends with my future sister-in-law, Karen Armstrong Kunkel '84.  They all worked together down at Sharky's Pizza on Hilton Head Island, and they even got their first house together in Mount Lookout.

Karen and Beth are first cousins, but seem like sisters. Now they have joined together to create a small retail business called The Flea. This unique boutique sells furniture and home dcor items in the shabby-chic/cottage style. You'll find a little bit of everything: distressed furniture (tables, chairs, lamps, desks, and benches), vintage fabrics, trays, trunks, picture frames and more. "For years, we shopped at flea markets and antique stores for our own houses," said Karen. "Now we've just turned that hobby into a business."

To discover fun and unique items for your home, you should stop at The Flea, located at Riverside Antique Mall on Kellogg Avenue. While you are there you can go next door and eat at Swampwater Grill, owned by Chris Ornella '90.

The dots continue to connect- Karen married Mike Veeneman '83 and they have two sons: Sam Veeneman '18 is currently a sophomore at McNick and Hank attends Guardian Angels School. Beth has one son, Charlie Keith, who attends Guardian Angels.

Art Show for Rachel Wadell '12
Congratulations to Rachel Waddel '12, and her senior art show, Human Nature. Rachel is a student at Wheeling Jesuit University, and she has been working to combine her biology major and art minor to get into biological illustration. For her senior research project, She worked on illustrating a dichotomous key to the crayfish of West Virginia, which should be published next winter. She has also created a body of work for her senior art show that is made up of biological subject matter. Rachel plans on attending Chatham University for grad school to earn an MFA in Interdisciplinary Design, which will continue to let her combine science and art so that she can hopefully work for a museum, textbook company, or other biological publications.

Rockets Excel at NKU
On April 3, three 2015 McNicholas grads:  Sydney Baker, Augustino Giambrone, and James Harrington were inducted into Northern Kentucky University's chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society.  Alpha Lambda Delta is an honor society for first year students who are in the top 20% and have at least a 3.5 GPA.   This year's NKU inductees had GPAs of 3.75 and higher.

On March 16, James Harrington was honored as one of 36 "Outstanding Freshmen" through the First-Years program at Northern Kentucky University.   The First-Years program offers freshman students the opportunity to experience their first college year in an environment that promotes active learning, collaboration and personal development.   He is featured on the NKU website.
