New Cafeteria / Student Union Plan
McNick Plans upgrade to café with McNick at Night Special Appeal

Over 260 people enjoyed a beautiful evening of good food, one-of-a-kind auction items, and great fun at McNick at Night on March 14 at the Norlyn Manor Batavia. Alumni, current parents, past parents, and friends of McNicholas High School raised just over$105,000 before expenses for the school.

Each year, McNick at Night closes the evening with a Special Appeal for some campus project or improvement. This year, the appeal will go toward updates and improvements to the McNick Café and Student Union including:
· vinyl flooring in a "wave" pattern
· wall sconce light fixtures
· ceiling fans
· stage platform and wall logo graphic
· vending and trash area
· video monitors
· new tables and chairs

Work on the McNick Café and Student Union is projected to begin at the conclusion of this school year and slated to be finished by the start of the 2015-16 school year.

Memorial Day

The Military Memorial Committee will hold its annual memorial service at McNicholas High School on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25.  The Color Guard from the American Legion Post 484 will arrive at McNick between 9:00-9:30 for a short ceremony that includes a prayer, gun salute and the playing of Taps.    We ask that everyone arrive no later than 9 a.m.  This event is open to the general public, and the committee provides coffee, juice, donuts, etc. We hope that you will consider spending that morning with us to honor those who have served our country.

Lauren Fisher - Wins Award

Senior Lauren Fisher earned the National Scholastic Writing Award for her critical essay "The Great and Terrible F-Word: Exploring society's disdain for, and desperate need of feminism." As a National Award recipient, she has been invited to the awards ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City on June 11.

Fisher's essay earned a Gold Key Award from the Belin-Blank Center before she advanced to the national competition. The Gold Key Award was presented by The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a nonprofit whose mission is "to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and present their remarkable work to the world." The Alliance takes pride in its early identification of accomplished and creative leaders. Alumni writers include Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, and Joyce Carol Oates.

Fisher's essay, which was originally published in The McNicholas Milestone, was one of 1840 writing entries submitted by writers in grades 7-12 across the Midwest. It was also featured on the Belin-Blank Center's blog, Freehand.

Fisher is a third year journalism student and the Editor-in-Chief of The McNicholas Milestone. She has written 47 articles for the Milestone and has had her work published in The Cincinnati Enquirer, The Forest Hills Journal, and on various local websites and blogs.

English Department Chair and journalism teacher Angie Noble said, "In my 17 years as a journalism teacher, I have never worked with a student who has had such insight, such a mature world view, and such ethics in her writing. I look forward to every idea she has and every story she writes because I know it will be accurate, well-researched, and the interviews as well as her own commentary will be better than what I can read in many professional publications."

Alumni Bowling League

A big thank you to the 40 bowlers who kicked off the first ever McNicholas Alumni Bowling League.  The league started back in the fall and bowled on the second Saturday of the month for a total of 8 weeks. Congratulations to Dave Feck '79, captain of his team McShicken, for their first place finish.  Second Place went to Sue Adams Grosney '69 and her team the green bombers.  Other bowlers of note:  Don Brauning, husband of Tina Knight Brauning' 82, was the high game Men's with a 229 and Lucy Moeller Miller '84 was the high game female with a 206. The best series for the men was Rob Minardi '88 and for the women it was Lucy Moeller Miller '84.  A great time was had by all.  If you are interested in joining us next year, Cherry Gove Lanes said that we can expand up to 56 people next year.  You do not need to be a great bowler.  Your Alumni Manager came in last place, but still had a great time.

Steph Krusling '11 NCAA Champion

Congratulations to Steph and her basketball team from Thomas More College. The Saints were seeded #1 and finished with a perfect 33-0 mark.  In March, they defeated the 3rd ranked team George Fox Universty, 83-62, to win the College's first-ever National Championship. As a senior guard, Steph led the team with two steals in the game.  Winning the championship has been "a dream come true" according to Steph.

Deceased List
We have worked very hard to identify as many graduates as possible who are no longer with us.  Several alumni have really stepped up to take care of their classmates. We have also been blessed to have
Mary Ann Moeller Christmann '56 working to research this information for us.  We know our list will never be perfect, but with your continued support we can continually try to update and improve this list. We have approximately 50 graduates left who do not have a date of their passing on their class list.  Please look over our list and see if you can help us honor these classmates. If you know anyone that has not been reported to us, please take a moment to contact the alumni office.

Work in the McNicholas Garden

Alumni, parents and current students join forces to help the garden area in front of the Auxiliary Gym.  Regina Phelps Goines '76, Mary Dennemann '93, and Lauren Wulker '02 are all graduates of McNicholas High School and teach here as well.  They have joined together to make the vegetable garden a place for learning, work and fun.  Many current students as well as other alumni have responded to their call for help.  Alumni who have spots span the generations from Sr. Janet Roesener '52 to current science students.  If you are interested in helping out, or would like to have a garden spot next year, please contact Lauren Wulker.
