A SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE

Happy New Year to all of you! As you know I'm no fan of winter. BUT I absolutely love the concept of the New Year ushering in a time of renewal. A time to begin again or to get down to serious business. A chance to resolve to start, quit, or finally finish something we long to do.

There is no shortage of "how to" advice in the magazines:  Lose those pounds, clear out your clutter, simplify your schedule and on and on. And while setting goals is great, I offer a proposal for you to strongly consider.

Before you sign up for that Yoga class, or bring your unwanted clutter to Goodwill, think for a moment about your spiritual life. Do you have a place that you can readily take your daily joys and sorrows? To celebrate or find consolation. To ask for help....or just say thanks for the help.

Cell phones are a great way for us to instantly connect with others when we want to. Think about it. There is a certain discipline that we must exact in order to maintain our phones so that when we want to send that text or make that call, we can do so with ease.

We charge them up. We make sure we have enough minutes. We make sure the battery works. We keep it turned on and know its location. It's good to have instant connection when we need it.

Having a spiritual discipline is creating a way of instant connection to Spirit. It's not supposed to be another "task" like brushing your teeth, or taking your supplements. It's the framework within which all "tasks" actually all of life happens.

I know when I make my Spiritual discipline a priority things flow more easily. My mood is brighter and and I feel grateful.I feel less contracted and more expansive. I feel like I have a benevolent army watching over me and caring for me 100% 24/7.

There are so many ways to create a daily spiritual discipline. Just like there are many ways to exercise, you can create one that feels right for you. Whether you start and stick with a gratitude journal, or take a few minutes every day to be in nature, or read something inspiring every day. My mother said the Rosary every morning rain or shine. It's what worked for her. Meditate.Take 5 minutes a day and breathe and connect. Do what works for you.

To those who might think that having a spiritual discipline is too rigid, and that things like prayer should be "spontaneous" and when truly needed, consider the words of Barbara Cawthorne Crafton author of Meditations of the Book of Psalms:

"Discipline doesn't crush the spirit: it sets it free. It gives it a room of its own. It honors its gifts. Your discipline should not be rigid or harsh: it is intended for your joy, not to increase your guilt. It is a gift, not a job."

When many cares fill my find, your consolations cheer my soul.
~Psalm 94:14

notes from the Universe
A NOTE FROM THE UNIVERSE

"I want you to know that I've ordered up another year for you - think I will call it 2016. I'm going to put most of the same people from 2015 in it, since you all think so much alike.

But there will also be a few, very cool cats coming to play - give them some time to grow up though.

And I am going to have things start up pretty much where they left off in 2014, for continuity's sake. Flips folks out too much when I don't.

All in all, 365 more days in Paradise, and only one request of you:

DREAM BIGGER
