HOW DID I GET HERE SO FAST?

So last week, there we sat. Mike and I, at the Senior Center. Yep, I said the Senior Center. It is a lovely center and I am amazed at all they have to offer. One of their free services is advice about Social Security, Medicare, retirement and all that......My engineer husband, when he found out our SHINE counselor was also an engineer got even more pumped up, because they could use engineer language and discuss bar charts, pie charts and such. The only pie I know is the one you eat. Mike was enthused and upbeat, because he was collecting the data that we will need.....because of .....our age.

So as they went on and on, I did what I normally do when I can't relate: I left my body. Imagined getting on a "slow boat to China". I do the same when some young savvy social media expert calls me and wants to help me with my SEO for my website. They use words like algorithms, key tags and optimizations and that's when I take off.

I realized when I got home and had to be with myself in my head, I was thinking" I don't quite care for this aging thing. I am so not ready.... And dear Lord, how did we get here so fast? Weren't we just pushing our kids on swings just yesterday??" I decided to use the day to put the winter shoes in the basement and bring the summer shoes up. As I looked at most of my shoes, I realized the days were gone when I would get my feet back in those fancy high heels. Now it's the comfort that is of primary importance.

I was doing a Debby Downer in my head
. I have been throwing AARP mail away since they started up with me when I turned 40!! "Leave me alone, I am never going to need you or want you!" But there it was on paper at the Senior Center staring me in the face as a "supplemental insurance choice" I swear that it was actually smirking at me.

I decided to do some tapping on the issue, with the goal of releasing my aging issues, thus creating space for my thoughts to become more positive. I realized I do have my health, no chronic health issues or pain. I take good care of myself. I reminded myself of loved ones and others who never made it this far. And as long as I am here and have purpose, does age really matter?? We all age at the same rate, aging is part of the package deal. The trick is to do it with grace and dignity. And humor, and keeping the crazy part alive. That is really important to not give up on your crazy if you get my drift. So, that is my plan. Bye-bye Debbie.

Then I found some beautiful quotes by famous people on aging and will share some of them with you...

"Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, but beautiful old people are works of art.
~ Eleanor Roosevelt

"Those who love deeply never grow old; they may die of old age, but they die young."
~ Ben Franklin

"We don't stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing."
~ George Bernard Shaw

"I have reached an age when if someone tells me to wear socks, I don't have to."
~ Albert Einstein

"In fact, looking back, it seems to me that I was clueless until I reached 50 years old."
~ Nora Ephron.

"More wrinkles, fewer doubts. Older body, younger spirit. Less time, greater purpose...
~ Tina Marian

First as a child, it seems like the entire world is there for you and you rush to drink from its every cup, sometimes wondering to yourself how anything could ever be more fun.

Then, as you grow older, if you're observant, you realize much of what  you enjoy was made possible by the contributions, work, and labor of those who came before you.

And you are taken aback, disappointed even, because with maturity you can now see the cracks in the facades, imperfections in the details, and 10,000 ways it could all have been done better..

At which point, folks typically choose one of the two paths: Spend a lifetime lamenting how far from perfect things are. OR, to one degree or another, roll up their sleeves and pitch in.

And should they choose the latter with gusto, they will come to know, to the core of their sacred being, that the differences they might make in the world CANNOT be made by another.

And they will discover the answer to their often-wondered childhood question.......

That the most fun one can have in time and space comes from making such a difference, and that the joy derived in serving in 10,000 times that of being served.
