Greetings!

We are pleased to announce that this year's Volunteers of the Year are Alison Wilks and Wendy Fischer!

Wendy and Alison have worked tirelessly to coordinate, manage and promote Gesher's SCRIP program. Thanks to their volunteer efforts, Gesher has pulled in hundreds of dollars in additional income. Throughout the year, Wendy and Alison have routinely spent multiple days a week devoting their already limited time to ensure that the SCRIP program runs effectively, and efficiently.

Gesher couldn't exist without everyone doing their part.  Please join us in thanking Alison and Wendy for all of their hard work at the Annual Meeting on Monday, June 3, at 7:00 pm.  (Come earlier at 6:00 pm for a reception honoring Morah Melanie Eisen and Debra Mendelson in recognition and celebration of their multiple years of service to Gesher.)

Shabbat Shalom!

Annual Meeting Invitation
Raising the Flag
Rally round when we raise the flags of the United States and Israel tomorrow, May 31, at 3:10 pm - following Kabballat Shabbat in the classrooms.  As a class gift, the families of our graduating eighth graders  banded together to purchase and erect two new flagpoles located to the left of our main entrance.  Special thanks to Cynthia Rutzick, Michelle Stravitz, and Michelle Nash (and a shout out to William Monterrosa) for all their hard work!  Following the ceremony, all students will enjoy ice cream, a gift from the Student Council, celebrating the end of our ERB testing week!

Checking for ticks
Please remember to check your children on a regular basis for ticks now that the weather is warmer and children are spending more time outside. Remind your older children to check themselves paying careful attention to feel for ticks in their hair, under their arms, around their ears, inside their navel, behind their knees, in the bend of the elbows, between the legs, and around the waist. I have seen several students this week in the clinic with ticks. If a tick is found and removed, monitor the site and have your child seen by his or her pediatrician if a fever develops or if a rash or redness develops around the tick attachment site.  Please contact Kristen Locklin, Gesher's nurse, if you have any questions at klocklin@gesher-jds.org.

Food Bus, Inc.-A non-profit dedicated to recovering food, filling pantries, and easing hunger in our communities- Coming Next Fall To Gesher JDS

There are a lot of hungry people in our community and next fall we will try to feed more of them. In fact, "14.5 percent of U.S. households struggle to put enough food on the table. More than 48 million Americans-including 16.2 million children-live in these households." (Source: Household Food Security in the United States, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service).

A local pantry, Food for Others, notes that "even though Northern Virginia is considered one of the wealthiest jurisdictions in the country, we still face a poverty rate of about 5%. This means, based on U.S. Census figures, that more than 90,000 people are living in poverty and 30 percent are children", (just in Northern Virginia).

We are going to team up with Food Bus, a local non-profit that works to recover unopened/unused food that would otherwise be thrown in the trash, distributes it to local food pantries, and helps to feed the hungry in our community.

Instead of throwing unopened food in the trash, we will collect it, store it in a refrigerator in or near the cafeteria, and donate it weekly to a local food pantry.   Volunteers will be needed to pick up the food from our cafeteria and take it to the selected food pantry. Questions? Contact Gesher mom and Food Bus Board Member, Sherri Lefkowitz Foster at slfoster11@msn.com.

Eighth Grade Science Fair

The eighth grade has been busy pursuing individual science projects- which will be presented in a Science Fair for the other grades during the day and for parents in the evening on June 4.

What Comes After Gesher?

For Gesher alumni who will not be continuing into a Jewish high school, a new supplementary school option - Shoresh Hebrew High School - may be just the thing!  For more information, see the Community Announcements Section below

Spring Recital

Join us for a delightful evening of music - our first ever Spring Recital.  Mark your calendar for Tuesday, June 11, at 7:00 pm, and get ready for Gesher's Makhelah (Chorus), Klezmer Band, Upper Grades Music Workshop, and our Middle School Band performing a wide repertoire of Jewish music from over the centuries and around the world.  Many thanks to P'nina McCabe, Rabbi Tonti, and Cantor Rabinowitz.

Lost and Found

Now that the weather is turning warmer our collection of lost and found items is increasing.  Please come in and check the coat rack to see if any belong to your family!  At the end of the school year all remaining items are donated to needy families.

Pictures:

Last week, Kitah Gimel visited the National Gallery of Art and saw paintings and sculptures that depicted Roman gods and mythology.  They also stopped to take a picture with the Capitol Building.

Our Spring Eventless Event

Have you answered your e-invitation inviting you to support the school this Spring and make a donation to our Annual Fund, Shomrei Gesher, as if we were throwing an elaborate gala or dinner party as we have done in previous years?  We have collected over $36,000 so far - so we're over half way to reaching our goal of $60,000!

Tuition at Gesher alone does not meet the cost of educating our students, so we need everyone's philanthropic support, tzedakah, to help us meet our budget and provide for the services we have in place for the students.

Why not make your Spring pledge or your gift to Gesher right now?  Click here to donate on-line!  Forward this On the Bridge to your friends and family members and invite them to join in our Spring 2013 Eventless Event.  Every donation helps us reach our goal!

SCRIP UPDATE!

Scrip (gift card) order forms and information went home in your child's backpack this week. Please consider a purchase of gift cards for your end of school year needs, gifts and grocery shopping. There is plenty in stock in the office. Fill out your form with what you'd like to purchase and send it to the office with your check made out to Gesher Scrip. There's a space on the form for whether you'll pick up your gift cards, or whether you'd like them sent home with your child. Gesher makes money with every sale of these cards, and you don't pay a penny more than face value. $50 in Safeway costs $50 and so on.

Keep buying through the end of the school year! Thank you for your year-long support of the program!
