Voinovich School project promotes smoking cessation intervention in SE Ohio

The Voinovich School of
Laura Milazzo, Voinovich School senior research associate
Leadership and Public Affairs recently received two additional years of funding from the Ohio Department of Health to work with six counties in Southeast Ohio to promote an evidence-based smoking cessation intervention.

The project is part of a broader initiative under the Ohio Partnership for Smoke Free Families, which seeks to reduce smoking among Ohio women before, during and after pregnancy. Another project objective is to work to reduce exposure to second-hand smoke. To accomplish these goals, the partnership is attempting to increase the adoption, reach and impact of a smoking cessation intervention from the U.S. Public Health Service called the five A's (Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist and Arrange).

With the funding renewal, the Voinovich School has intensified its efforts in the four counties in which the team had previously been working, while also expanding the project into two additional counties.

The goal is to saturate communities in the six Southeastern Ohio counties with a variety of trained providers offering the same message: quit smoking. The Voinovich School will be working with providers in maternal and reproductive health; Women, Infants, and Children (WIC); and, Help Me Grow as well as other health and social service providers. Because smoking is highly accepted in these counties, saturation helps ensure that people will receive the same message of cessation from multiple sources.

According to Laura Milazzo, senior research associate at the Voinovich School, as a result of the Voinovich School's trainings many more healthcare and social service providers are now using the cessation intervention, and are also more aware of all five of the intervention steps.
First Voinovich Scholar Showcase celebrates achievements of three undergraduates

Voinovich School students, faculty and staff gathered on Dec. 1 for the first Voinovich Scholar Showcase, highlighting the accomplishments of three current Voinovich Undergraduate Research Scholars.

Holly Craycraft, research associate with the Voinovich School and coordinator of the Undergraduate Research Scholar program, hopes to facilitate monthly showcases to offer scholars the opportunity to engage with the School, connect with one another and understand the Scholars' work.

Haley Trottier, a senior studying communication sciences and disorders, presented her work with the Smoke-Free Families Project, which seeks to reduce smoking among Ohio women before, during and after pregnancy. Within a wider collaborative effort, the Voinovich School is focused primarily upon the facilitation of evidence-based smoking cessation intervention training for health care providers in Southeast Ohio.

The second presentation, given by senior journalism student Danielle Keeton-Olsen and Abdalah El-Barrad, a junior dual majoring in applied mathematics and economics, showcased a very different aspect of the Voinovich School's work.

Keeton-Olsen and El-Barrad began working last semester to create a map of racial and ethnic minority population density in Ohio. The project demonstrates differences in minority population density through a color-coded scale, with dark blue representing the highest levels of minority population density and light blue/gray representing the lowest levels of minority population density. The map allows users to analyze differences in population demographics at both a large scale, comparing differences across Ohio counties, and a small scale, examining block-by-block demographics in individual counties.

Craycraft praised the scholars for their work and said that she plans to host the next Scholar Showcase at the end of January, featuring the work of other accomplished undergraduates in the program.

AJ Auld discusses sports administration entrepreneurship

The road to entrepreneurship starts in college, said AJ Auld. Auld, an entrepreneur who has launched multiple ventures, spoke to Ohio University students on November 3, 2015, about preparing for success by getting involved during college, as part of the Center for Entrepreneurship's guest lecture series.

Auld is the CEO and founder of Titanium Lacrosse, one of the Midwest's leading lacrosse organizations specializing in player development through training, events and travel teams. Founded in 2009, Titanium has trained more than 10,000 players ages three through 18 and has helped more than 200 student-athletes secure scholarships and/or roster spots with college lacrosse programs in divisions 1, 2 and 3.

Prior to starting Titanium, Auld founded Bright Discounts, a company that helps athletic teams' booster programs and school systems to raise funds by connecting them with local merchants. Founded in 2003, Bright Discounts has worked with hundreds of organizations including sports teams, school systems and military support groups. The company has operated in 26 states (from Maine to Hawaii) and raised more than $1 million collectively for nonprofit organizations.
OHIO celebrates International GIS Day with open house

Ohio University celebrated Geography Awareness Week and International GIS Day with its second annual GIS Open House at the Steven L. Schoonover Center for Communication.

The Open House's highlight was a presentation from Dennis Dimick, award-winning National Geographic executive environment editor and photojournalist. Dimick led an audience of 100 through a rich photo slideshow depicting the gravity of human impacts on the natural environment, including scenes of mountaintop removal, aquifer loss and the disappearing Aral Sea.

"We have incredibly vast knowledge about our impact on the environment - now we need to ask ourselves what we'll do with that knowledge," Dimick said.

Dimick said National Geographic's focus has been to encourage voters to support legislators who care about the environmental issues they resonate with. Subsistence agriculture, nitrogen fertilizers, ocean acidification and cheap energy production are the issues he believes will be most pressing in coming years.
