Reminders

It's official - a date has been set for the 2016 Metro D.C. Synod Assembly. We will meet one-day on Sat. June 18, 2016 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gaithersburg, Md.

Oct. 10, 9:30 a.m.-noon, St. Mark's in Springfield, Va.; or Oct. 24, St. Luke in Silver Spring, Md., 9:30 a.m.-noon
"Growing Church" is a workshop hosted by synod's New & Renewing Missions Table. Every participant will leave with 2-4 actions they can implement in their congregation that will help them connect with new people. More under "Events" tab on synod website.

Live-streaming of "The Church's Journey in Art and Song," an evening of eclectic singing by the ELCA Worship Jubilee assembly, will be available for anyone who cannot be with us in Atlanta. Just go to the "Called to Be a Living Voice" website and follow the link a little before 7 p.m. (EDT). Better yet, come and experience this great week live. There is still room to register.

Lutheran Lay Fellowship (LLF) Luncheons are for Lutherans and friends. August presentation will feature Nelvin Vos, speaking on "Ministry in Daily Life." A conversation and organizing meeting of the Racial Justice Team in the synod is open to everyone. So far, the group has been primarily D.C. pastors, deacons and lay leaders with some people from Maryland and Virginia, but organizers encourage connecting with other parts of the synod. Initial facilitators include the Rev. Karen Brau, the Rev. Wendy Moen, the Rev. James Phillips and the Rev. Michael Wilker. The parking lot entrance to Our Redeemer LC is located on 19th St. NE, between Webster and Varnum. Lunch is included in the event registration fee of $10. Sept. 2-3, beginning Wed. at noon, Roslyn Conference Center in Richmond, Virg.
"Hope-Filled Ministry in an Age of Apathy: A Summit for Young Pastors" is an ecumenical summit planned by the Virginia Council of Churches. The theme will be based on Jeremiah 29:11-14. The first day will focus on the church in a changing culture and the changing face of ministry, led by Dr. Adam Bond. The second day will focus on the role of Christian leaders in a pluralistic society led by Dr. Christy Lohr Sapp. Participants should be under the age of forty with clergy status. Many in our area will be attending the ELCA Worship Jubilee and Association of Lutheran Church Musicians gathering - "Called to Be a Living Voice" - along with hundreds of pastors, musicians, artists, lay leaders and others interested in the worship life of the church. The program will help congregations imagine what their commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation (in 2017) may be like, with a forward-looking, mission-oriented perspective. Participants will also have a chance to provide input to the worship staffs of the ELCA and Augsburg Fortress. More at www.livingvoice2015.org.

Oct. 15-19, Salt Lake City

For the first time in two decades, the Parliament of the World's Religions will be held in the U.S. Taking advantage of this extraordinary opportunity, SCUPE (Seminary Consortium for Urban Pastoral Education) will offer a 6-day course at that time, using insights gained from the Parliament to create a framework for a theology in this multi-religious world. Nominate a pastor ASAP to participate in the "12th International Seminar within the Luther Decade." This study opportunity will be led by Prof. Dr. Theodor Dieter and Prof. Dr. Sarah Hinlicky Wilson from the Institute for Ecumenical Research in Strasbourg. The topic will be "The Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit in Luther's Theology." About 20 pastors from the 7 regions within the LWF will participate.
